While it’s unclear if we’ll ever get a large-scale open-world Game of Thrones or ASOIF RPG that does the IP justice, there are plenty of excellent RPGs out there for fans of Game of Thrones‘ drama, politics, unforgettable characters, mythical creatures and epic dragon fights, and its iconic medieval fantasy world.
Game Of Thrones: The RPG (2012)
As mentioned, there haven’t been very many good and faithful attempts at Game of Thrones or A Song of Ice and Fire-based RPGs in the past. However, fans of the franchise should definitely give the 2012 Game of Thrones RPG a look, with a few caveats. The game itself is not well-regarded among RPGs and is far inferior to most of the other games on this list, but it is arguably the best Game of Thrones-specific RPG out there.
This game is worth checking out if you’re a die-hard fan of the HBO television series. It takes place at the same time as the first season of the show, but following two original protagonists navigating the same political intrigue, warfare, and moral choices seen in the show during the War of the Five Kings.
Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord
Mount & Blade 2 is a highly regarded medieval fantasy RPG that is a must-play for Game of Thrones fans, and is one of a few entries on this list that has a dedicated Game of Thones full conversion mod available. That said, I’d highly recommend playing the base version of Mount & Blade 2 first.
Mount & Blade 2’s Realm of Thrones mod is a “total conversion mod for Mount & Blade 2 Bannerlord” that transforms the game’s world of Calradia into Westeros and Essos from the HBO series. The mod includes “hundreds of characters … along with over twenty kingdoms from the Free Folk … to the Dothraki of the Great Grass Sea,” and is an incredible new way for fans to experience Game of Thrones.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a great RPG alternative for fans of the Game of Thrones franchise, delivering a similarly mature, morally complex fantasy world. Set in a war-torn land filled with political intrigue, shifting alliances, and bloody, brutal consequences, the game mirrors the grounded tone that defines Westeros.
Like Game of Thrones, the story emphasizes difficult choices where there is rarely a clear “good” outcome, and decisions can have lasting consequences. The richly detailed world, complex characters, and emphasis on human drama over traditional heroic fantasy make The Witcher 3 especially appealing to fans who enjoy the darker, realistic side of fantasy storytelling.
GreedFall
GreedFall is a somewhat hidden gem that fans of Game of Thrones or A Song of Ice and Fire will want to check out. It’s set on a newly discovered island contested by colonial powers, religious orders, and native tribes, and the story centers on diplomacy, betrayal, and constantly shifting alliances. That said, the game received relatively mixed reviews, which were largely due to gameplay as opposed to storytelling.
Its grounded world, rich cultures, and reputation-based choices are reminiscent of Martin’s vision of Westeros, and despite middling critical reviews at launch, the game has become a sort of cult hit among RPG lovers.
Baldur’s Gate 3
While you’ve likely already played Baldur’s Gate 3 for other reasons, it is a great RPG specifically for fans of A Song of Ice and Fire and GoT. It captures the series’ emphasis on political maneuvering, complex characters, and difficult choices that have real consequences in the world.
Much like ASOIF, BG3 focuses less on simple good-versus-evil heroism and more on morally gray decisions that shape alliances, rivalries, and outcomes. Players constantly navigate competing factions, hidden agendas, and secret personal ambitions, echoing the scheming between noble houses in Westeros.
Its deep role-playing systems also allow players to manipulate situations through persuasion, deception, or intimidation, rewarding strategy and cunning—qualities that define many of George R.R. Martin’s most compelling characters. Also, there are dragons.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is an ideal RPG for Game of Thrones fans thanks to its gritty, grounded medieval setting and commitment to realism. Instead of magic and mythical heroes, the game focuses on the harsh realities of feudal life, including warfare, social hierarchy, and survival.
Players navigate a world shaped by lords, rival claimants, and shifting loyalties, where status and reputation matter. Its detailed historical world and emphasis on authentic medieval politics echo the brutal, believable atmosphere that defines the various struggles for power in Westeros.
Tainted Grail: The Fall Of Avalon
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon should intrigue Game of Thrones fans who haven’t yet had a chance to play. It’s set in a dark, decaying fantasy world where hope is fading and power struggles shape the fate of entire regions. Inspired by Arthurian legend but with a dark and gory twist, the game explores collapsing kingdoms, desperate leaders, and societies trying to survive as order breaks down.
Rather than focusing on heroes or destiny, it emphasizes survival, influence, and the consequences of personal decisions. The narrative often deals with ambition, betrayal, and competing claims to authority, themes that will strongly resonate with GoT fans. There’s currently a free demo of Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon on Steam, where it has 88% positive user review scores.
Dragon Age: Origins
Dragon Age: Origins is a fantasy RPG set in the kingdom of Ferelden, where the player becomes a Grey Warden, a member of an ancient order tasked with stopping a catastrophic invasion known as the Blight. Most significantly (and spoiler alert here), dragons exist in Dragon Age: Origins, and much like in Game of Thrones, they are quite rare and stay out of sight most of the time, giving them more significance when they actually show up.
Players can encounter High Dragons, which are powerful, optional boss enemies found in certain regions of the world. One of the most notable encounters is the High Dragon atop the Mountain near the Temple of Sacred Ashes, where a cult worships the creature as a divine being. If you want a fun and well-written RPG with solid dragon lore, look no further.
Elden Ring
If you’re looking for a world from the mind behind Game of Thrones himself, George R.R. Martin’s involvement in Elden Ring isn’t the only thing the game has to offer for fans of the franchise. Elden Ring‘s massive open world is full of mystery and magic, as well as horrifying monsters and countless sinister plots and flawed heroes.
Elden Ring is a difficult RPG that will take some getting used to if you’re not a fan of the Soulsborne genre. But if you are up to the task and are itching for something that gives you the same sense of wonder and awe that you felt when first stepping into the world of Westeros, it’s well worth the challenge.
Crusader Kings 3: CK3AGOT Mod
The Crusader Kings III: A Game of Thrones mod (aka CK3AGOT) is a massive total conversion mod that transforms Paradox’s medieval strategy RPG into the world of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. Instead of ruling historical European kingdoms, players take control of noble houses across Westeros, managing dynasties, alliances, and rivalries in the struggle for power.
The mod recreates the continent with thousands of provinces, dozens of cultures, and the major religions of the setting. Players can rule famous houses like the Starks, Lannisters, or Targaryens, participate in major conflicts such as Robert’s Rebellion, and navigate complex political systems like the Iron Throne and the Small Council. With hundreds of custom events, characters, artifacts, and mechanics, it aims to simulate the political drama and dynastic intrigue of Martin’s universe.
The Crusader Kings 3: A Game of Trones conversion mod is largely considered the definitive Game of Thrones RPG experience at the moment, at least until a proper new open-world RPG for current- or next-gen consoles is released. Seeing as there hasn’t been an official announcement on that front, the CK3AGOT mod or any of the other games on this list will keep you busy while you wait.
