10 Most Iconic Anime Villain Groups of All Time

There are only a handful of groups of villains in anime so iconic that they define the series they’re in. Most good anime franchises have a couple of good villains, but only a select few have groups of villains that truly transcend the art form.

There isn’t one rule that defines a good group of villains in anime. A quality group of evildoers can be brought together through anger, fear, or something more sinister. Sometimes, they’re not sinister at all, and their evil deeds are really just lighthearted moments made for a laugh.

Heroes need good villain groups to fight against. Without an outstanding group of bad guys, a hero doesn’t have a reason to exist. For better or worse, these villains bring significance to the series that it wouldn’t have otherwise.

God Hand

Berserk

Out of every group of villains in anime, there might not be one quite as evil as the God Hand in Berserk. The God Hand exists within Berserk to serve the Idea of Evil’s will, and they’re proficient to say the least. It’s hard to understand the God Hand because of how truly evil, immoral, and maniacal they are.

The God Hand consists of five members: Void, Slan, Ubik, Conrad, and Femto. Griffith, one of the most evil villains in anime, sacrificed all of his friends and allies to become one of the five members. They’re a terrifying group that nobody can stand up to, and it’s going to take everything and more from Guts if he’s going to defeat them.

The Ginyu Force

Dragon Ball Z

The Ginyu Force is equal parts terrifying and hilarious. They’re a ridiculous group of fairly competent fighters who pushed the Z Fighters well past their limits on Namek. Like the God Hand, The Ginyu Force consists of five members: Captain Ginyu, Jeice, Burter, Recoome, and Guldo.

Captain Ginyu has one of the strongest techniques in Dragon Ball and is one of the many villains Goku couldn’t beat on his own. Recoome has a terrifying level of endurance, suffering blow after blow without stopping his onslaught. Guldo can stop time, another one of the strongest techniques in the series.

The Homunculi

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

The Homunculi in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are some of the strongest characters in the series. There are seven in total, each representing one of the seven deadly sins: Pride, Lust, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Gluttony. They each come from Father, the main antagonist of the series.

The Homunculi are terrifying because they seem human in almost every way, but they’re not. Their ability to regenerate from seemingly lethal blows makes them almost indestructible, and their penchant for destruction makes them dangerous in every environment they’re in.

The League of Villains

My Hero Academia

The League of Villains is the perfect foil to the heroes in My Hero Academia. They identify as outcasts of society and want to take down the world that threw them away. Unfortunately for the heroes, they’re some of the strongest characters in My Hero Academia, and they’re more than capable of holding their own against the strongest of the strong.

There are a ton of villains in the League of Villains, and the most important are Shigaraki, All For One’s successor, Dabi, Endeavor’s son, Himiko Toga, a girl with a sad past and an outlandishly powerful Quirk, and Twice, another character with a brutal past and an equally brutal Quirk.

Team Rocket

Pokémon

Team Rocket is inarguably the most lovable villain group in anime. The organization at large is fairly evil, but the main representatives seen in the Pokémon franchise, Jessie and James, are laughably incompetant at their jobs. They’re accompanied by Meowth, one of the only Pokémon in the series who can talk like a human.

The Team Rocket Trio is so bad at capturing Pikachu or any of their other targets that their most common phrase is “Team Rocket’s blasting off again!” followed by the trio being sent into the sky. They’re never really a threat and fit the theme of the Pokémon anime series very well.

Cipher Pol

One Piece

Cipher Pol is an incredibly enigmatic group in One Piece. Their identities are hidden for most of the series, and when they’re finally revealed, they’re shown to be some of the most deceptive, conniving characters in the franchise.

The first time Cipher Pol is shown is during the Water 7 arc, one of the best arcs in One Piece. They’re a group of powerful fighters, each possessing incredible Devil Fruits that make them tough opponents for the Straw Hat Pirates. When they pop up again later in the series, they’re even stronger, and they’re probably going to be a thorn in Luffy’s side for a while.

The Espada

The Espada are undoubtedly one of the most iconic groups of villains in anime. They’re one of the best reasons to watch Bleach, and their fights are always highlights of the series. The Espada consists of 10 of Sosuke Aizen’s strongest Arrancar, and they’re worthy of their rank.

They each govern different forms of death. They cover forms like old age, sacrifice, despair, ecstasy, and more. They each also have unique character designs that make them stand out in a series filled with plenty of unique looks.

The Phantom Troupe

Hunter x Hunter

Most villain groups in anime are mysterious. It’s in their nature (and best interest) to not give too much information away, and none do it quite as well as The Phantom Troupe. Even after hundreds of episodes and chapters, it’s hard to tell just how powerful their leader, Chrollo Lucilfer is, and he wouldn’t want it any other way.

The Phantom Troupe resembles a 12-legged spider in that each member represents one of the legs while Chrollo represents the head. Each leg is equal in the decision-making process even if they’re not all equal in strength. They all also get a tattoo of their respective spider-leg number that shows how dedicated they are to their group.

The Twelve Demon Moons (Twelve Kizuki)

Demon Slayer

The Twelve Demon Moons are the strongest Demons in Demon Slayer. They’re twelve Demons hand-picked by Muzan Kibutsuji, the single strongest demon of them all. Each of the Twelve Kizuki has their rank written over their eyes, letting the titular Demon Slayers know exactly how strong their opponents are going to be before fighting.

The Upper Six Demon Moons are substantially stronger than the bottom six, and each rank is stronger than the last. The Upper Moon Rank One, Kokushibo, is so strong that he makes every Demon the Hashira have faced up until that point look almost entirely worthless.

The Akatsuki

Naruto

The Akatsuki is undoubtedly the most iconic villain group in anime. From their black robes with red clouds to their exceptional abilities, the Akatsuki command respect. They’re some of the strongest characters in Naruto, and each time they appear on-screen, something terrible is bound to happen.

There aren’t many villain groups in anime as competent as the Akatsuki. When they have a goal, they’re almost always capable of achieving it. They captured nearly all of the Tailed Beasts in the series, and if it wasn’t for Naruto’s Talk-no-Jutsu, they would’ve killed scores of people in the Hidden Leaf Village.
