The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power seasons 1 and 2 introduced many of the Second Age of Middle-earth‘s power players. We’ve had, of course, Galadriel, Elrond, Gil-galad, Celebrimbor, Cirdan, Míriel, Pharazôn, Elendil, Isildur, Sauron, a couple of Durins, as well as several other important characters. Now, as Rings of Power heads into the War of the Elves and Sauron, the doors are open for several other of Tolkien’s canon Second-Age characters. We are also sure to see some, like Gandalf, who aren’t technically supposed to appear in the Second Age, though Rings of Power is bound to bring them in anyway.
10
Anárion
Anárion is mentioned throughout Rings of Power‘s first two seasons, though he has yet to actually appear. This is the younger brother to Isildur—Elendil’s second son—and therefore is destined to become a prince of Gondor and a key figure in Middle-earth. So far in Rings of Power, he has been on the West side of Númenor and has therefore been removed from all the action. However, the Prime Video series is quickly working toward the destruction of the island kingdom, as well as the establishment of Elendil’s family as rulers in Middle-earth. Chances are, Rings of Power season 3 will be Anárion’s big moment.
9
Celeborn
Celeborn is another of Tolkien’s characters who should have appeared in Rings of Power but has been strangely absent. This is Galadriel’s husband, whom we see ruling by her side in Lothlorien in The Lord of the Rings. In Rings of Power season 1, Galadriel reveals that her husband was killed in battle, which is certainly not true according to canon. This TV adaptation has made a lot of changes, but it’s unlikely that Celeborn will remain dead. That would really be taking things too far. Instead, Galadriel is sure to learn in Rings of Power season 3 that Celeborn is alive and kicking.
8
Celebrian
Galadriel at least mentions Celeborn in Rings of Power, but she has yet to say a word about her daughter, Celebrian. In canon, Celebrian was born early on in the Second Age, so she should already be a thousand or so years old during the events of Rings of Power. It’s possible that, in this version of the story, Galadriel also believes that her daughter is dead. Regardless, it’s important that Celebrian make an appearance soon, since she should be meeting and falling in love with Elrond any day now. Rings of Power season 3 would be the perfect time to make all this happen.
7
Khamul The Easterling
Rings of Power season 2 saw Sauron leave Eregion with the Nine Rings for Men, which means he should begin distributing them in season 3. The identities of those who will receive these and ultimately become the Nazgûl are largely unknown, forgotten even by the wraiths themselves, by the events of The Lord of the Rings. However, we know that at least three of them were Númenóreans (it’s likely we’ve met them already in Rings of Power, but don’t know it yet), while another was known as Khamul the Easterling. Chances are, Sauron will head East (where the Stranger currently is) in Rings of Power season 3, and we will get a chance to finally meet Khamul.
6
Saruman
Saruman should technically not be in Rings of Power. This Lord of the Rings villain was initially one of the three Istari who traveled to Middle-earth in the Third Age to help the beings there prepare for Sauron’s inevitable return. However, since Rings of Power has officially brought Gandalf into the story during the Second Age, Saruman is sure to follow in season 3. There are theories that the Dark Wizard of Rhûn is Saruman, but he’s far more likely to turn out to be a Blue Wizard. So, Saruman is expected to make his appearance as Gandalf’s story continues.
5
Radagast
If Gandalf and Saruman are in Rings of Power, then Radagast will have to be as well. This was the third of the Istari sent to Middle-earth by the Valar. We only ever hear about him in The Lord of the Rings, since, by that point in the timeline, Radagast had long abandoned his mission to guide the Men and Elves against Sauron, instead choosing to dedicate himself entirely to nature. If he’s featured in Rings of Power season 3, we should see a version of him still eager to succeed in the Istari’s goals. It should make for an interesting shift.
4
The Blue Wizards
Rings of Power season 2 very likely introduced us to one of the Blue Wizards, but we are still due for another one. In Tolkien canon, the Blue Wizards were the first two Istari sent to Middle-earth by the Valar. Their names were Alater and Pallando, and they traveled East to Rhûn to thwart Sauron’s efforts to build forces there. In one version of the story, the Blue Wizards ended up establishing cults in Rhûn. It’s for this reason that the cult leader Wizard seen in Rings of Power is either Alatar or Pallando, though it is uncertain which.
3
Glorfindel
Glorfindel is easily among the most anticipated Second Age characters to appear in Rings of Power. He was initially introduced in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, when he rescued Frodo after his run-in with the Nazgûl and rushed him back to Rivendell. This role was, of course, given to Arwen in Peter Jackson’s film adaptation, so Glorfindel has yet to really be seen on screen. Rings of Power season 3 should change that, since this elf is a key friend and ally to Gil-galad and Elrond in the War of the Elves and Sauron.
2
Oropher
It’s a bit tricky to tell whether Oropher will appear in Rings of Power season 3 or in later installments, since the Prime Video series has so significantly changed the timeline. However, this may be a good time to introduce and set up his character. Oropher is the father of Thranduil and grandfather to Legolas, and it’s he who rules the Silvan Elves during the Second Age. He won’t join Gil-galad in the War of the Elves and Sauron, which will be at the center of Rings of Power season 3. However, he will finally join the fight during the War of the Last Alliance.
1
Amdír
Amdir is the ruler of Lórinand during the Second Age of Middle-earth, the realm that would later become Galadriel’s stomping ground of Lothlórien. Like Oropher, Amdir doesn’t join the Noldor Elves during the War of the Elves and Sauron, instead holding off until the start of the Last Alliance. Still, it seems likely that he would appear sooner rather than later in Rings of Power, especially given the condensed timeline. We’re sure to see Galadriel settle in as ruler of Lothlórien by the end of Rings of Power season 5, so season 3 is the perfect time to introduce that realm.
