20 Years Later, Star Of Disney’s Iconic 2-Part Sci-Fi Series Addresses Reboot Return Potential After Cliffhanger Ending

Raviv Ullman is well known for his part in the Disney Channel original series Phil of the Future, where he portrayed the show’s namesake, Phil Diffy. The show, which premiered in 2004, lasted for two long seasons and gave viewers 43 episodes. It centered around a family from 2121 that traveled back in time to 2004. Their time machine malfunctioned and couldn’t return them to their original time, so they were forced to blend in with the 2000s culture.

In an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan at SXSW for Drag, a comedy horror film directed by Ullman, the former Disney star discussed the possibility of rebooting Phil of the Future, considering so many other shows have been given a new life in the past few years.

Ullman intentionally pivoted his career away from acting toward storytelling. His love for being behind the camera started before he ever appeared on Disney Channel. He said, “During Phil of the Future, I would go off on the weekends with the camera crew and be their assistant camera.“

Despite his love for directing and controlling the narrative, there is still a part of Ullman that loves acting. He even admitted he would “100%” be willing to be a part of a Phil of the Future reboot. He said, “Heck yeah. I like working. I love those people. Absolutely. No one has called about it, but yeah.”

For now, the reboot is just a hope for those who remember the cliffhanger ending of the series. The episode, “Back to the Future (Not the Movie),” aired August 19, 2006. In the episode, Phil and his best friend Keely, played by Aly Michalka, finally confessed they had romantic feelings for each other. At the same time, the Diffy family successfully repaired their time machine and returned to 2121 — leaving Phil and Keely’s romance in the past.

Even though he’s open to it, Ullman hasn’t been waiting around for a call from Disney. His new film Drag premiered at SXSW this weekend, and it stars John Stamos and Lizzy Caplan. Viewers would be familiar with Stamos’ portrayal of Uncle Jesse in the television show Full House, and Caplan is known for her starring roles in Mean Girls and the Now You See Me franchise.

The story revolves around two sisters who rob a home in upstate New York. Their plan goes sideways when one of the sisters throws her back out and cannot physically leave the house. The film follows the duo as they try to leave the house before the owners return. The cast includes Lucy DeVito and Christine Ko in addition to Caplan and Stamos.

In the interview about Drag, Ullman said, “I loved filmmaking, so this is really a dream come true.“ For him, filmmaking has always been about “having fun.” He continued, “I think because I started so young, it was just about that I loved doing it. And we’re hoping that all the love that we brought into this project, and the cast, and the incredible work of our crew shines on the screen.”
