The space Western premiered on Fox in 2002 and was infamously canceled after only 11 of its 14 episodes had aired. Despite its short run, the series sold well when it was released on DVD and developed a strong cult following that, over the years, has always held out hope for a Firefly revival.
Now, something unusual has been unfolding on Nathan Fillion‘s Instagram, as he has been sharing videos of himself visiting the homes of his former Firefly co-stars – including Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau – and telling them that “it’s time.” Check out the posts below:
In the last post, visiting the home of Summer Glau, the caption confirms that an “announcement [is] coming soon…“ Of course, all this sudden activity on social media with the cast has fans buzzing and speculating about its meaning. Clearly, it hints at some kind of reunion, but what exactly it will be remains uncertain.
Many have tried to manage their expectations, suggesting that Fillion might be bringing the cast together for a rewatch on his podcast, Once We Were Spacemen, co-hosted by his former Firefly co-star Alan Tudyk, especially since the cryptic posts were made on that account.
However, in the video where Fillion reunites with Sean Maher, the caption reads, “Some of you have guessed convention, podcast, or cross-over. You are wrong.” In turn, the big “announcement” could be the long-awaited revival series, after all, or perhaps just a 25th anniversary reunion special with the cast.
In July 2025, Morena Baccarin addressed the chances of a Firefly revival, saying that she “seriously doubts” a live-action reboot of the series with the original cast would be feasible, though she did suggest a reboot in another medium:
“There’s always talk. There’s always people asking about it. Part of me would be excited to revisit that world, and part of me is also a little bit like, I love it so much where it is, that I’m worried about reopening that door. That’s a lot of different careers and different people that you have to negotiate with and make work and all that … schedules and whatnot. Could there be a comic book or [another] thing–maybe?”
Created by Joss Whedon, Firefly follows the renegade crew of the small spaceship, Serenity, in the year 2517 as they travel to unknown parts of the galaxy and evade warring factions and authority agents out to get them. The show’s success after it left the air led to Serenity, a 2005 film that continues the story from the series.
Firefly stars Nathan Fillion as Malcolm Reynolds, the owner and captain of Serenity, alongside Gina Torres as Zoe Alleyne Washburne, Alan Tudyk as Hoban Washburne, Morena Baccarin as Inara Serra, Sean Maher as Simon Tam, Summer Glau as River Tam, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, and Ron Glass.
