Artist: Ed Sheeran
From Ed Sheeran‘s third studio album ÷ (Divide), “Shape of You” is pop music at its finest. It has a catchy and repetitive structure, it’s infused with dancehall and tropical house elements, and it interpolates only one of the biggest R&B and hip-hop tracks of the 1990s: TLC‘s “No Scrubs.” And it was also a surprise that the song came from an artist whose sound often leans on the folk-pop and soft-rock genres — if songs like “The A Team,” “Lego House,” “Photograph,” and “Thinking Out Loud” are any indication. Having said that, “Shape of You” was a significant departure from the singer-songwriter’s usual sound at the time of its release in 2017.

To be fair, it was also the case with his 2014 hit “Thinking Out Loud.” The only difference was that “Shape of You” wasn’t only a shift from the sound fans have come to know; the lyrics were also criticized for being too shallow compared to his previous work.

Featuring T.I. and Pharrell Williams, Robin Thicke‘s “Blurred Lines” was a massive commercial success. The funk and R&B track spent 12 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart, broke sales records, was one of 2013’s biggest songs, and garnered various recognitions. Reasonably, the song truly was easy on the ears with its disco-inspired and infectious tune. However, we agree it’s one of the worst, not only of the year 2013 but of all time. While it dominated the summer of 2013, its suggestive lyrics and music video warranted its negative critical reception. A proof that an infectious sound doesn’t always guarantee a good song.
“Blurred Lines” was heavily criticized for its lyrics and themes, with many critics arguing that the song was sexist, misogynistic, and dismissive of consent. Some interpreted it as promoting rape culture. The music video also added fuel to the fire, drawing criticism for objectifying women, particularly through its depiction of seminude models alongside fully clothed male artists. While the song was a massive commercial success and catapulted Thicke to superstardom, the controversy surrounding it contributed to a decline in his public image and career momentum in the years that followed.
“Look What You Made Me Do”
Artist: Taylor Swift
After a year-long hiatus due to that controversial phone call, Taylor Swift returned with “Look What You Made Me Do” — an electropop track in which she owns her narrative, accompanied by a music video that embraces negative imagery and symbolism previously directed at her. As expected, the single broke records and was yet another commercially successful release from the Grammy winner. It was especially praised for Swift’s darker reinvention, marking a stark departure from her previous work. However, it was also criticized for the same reason, making “Look What You Made Me Do” one of her most polarizing releases.
Reputation was an interesting era, and part of that was the release of “Look What You Made Me Do.” Some critics said it was an enjoyable addition to Swift’s already rich catalog. Some, however, view the song as a petty track, and it was not, in any way, a fiery comeback as it ought to be. Its repetitive lyrics were also heavily criticized, though some celebrate the track’s overall dark tone. For a moment there, some even thought “the old Taylor” might be long gone with the song’s polarizing lyricism. Luckily, the entire Reputation album was far from a lyrical misstep.
