Queenis one of the few bands that have too many hits to count. Almost every single album has at least one hit song that people instantly recognize, and the 1980 album The Game has two of Queen’s most recognizable songs: “Another One Bites the Dust” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” The latter, written by Freddie Mercury, might be the fastest No. 1 hit ever written. The singer managed to capture the spirit of the simple and fun 1950s rock ‘n roll and brought it to the 1980s. Mercury’s voice and approach to the song are different from most of his other compositions, and the reason for that is that his inspiration for the song was none other than The King himself.

In 1979, Queen had left their native England to record their upcoming album, The Game, in Germany. It was in his hotel room in Munich that inspiration struck Freddie Mercury, and he wrote a classic Queen song in the bathroom. When the song came out, Mercury explained that he wrote the song in under ten minutes, and his choice to do it on guitar was a deliberate decision to challenge himself. “‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ took me five or ten minutes. I did that on the guitar, which I can’t play for nuts, and in one way it was quite a good thing because I was restricted, knowing only a few chords. It’s a good discipline because I simply had to write within a short framework. I couldn’t work through too many chords and because of that restriction I wrote a good song, I think.”
“Crazy Little Thing Called Love” is a short and funny love song. Mercury’s voice sounds deeper and lower than his usual tone, though it still sounds incredible. This choice of performance was no accident. Mercury was purposely emulating his early rock ‘n roll heroes. More specifically, the great Elvis Presley.

“Crazy Little Thing Called Love” Was an Elvis Tribute
Apart from being a No.1 hit song, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” is also special because of the inspiration behind it. The 1950s influence is evident in the rhythm and in Freddie Mercury’s vocal style, and years later, guitarist Brian May revealed that it was Mercury’s homage to Elvis Presley, who had died only two years before the song was written. May called the song “Freddie’s tribute to Elvis [Presley], in a way. He was very fond of Elvis and of Cliff [Richard].”
May went on to explain that the song was not only written in minutes but also recorded really quickly. He hadn’t arrived at the studio when Mercury brought it in, and in the few minutes it took him to arrive, the rest of the band had practically finished it. “Freddie wrote it very quickly, rushed in and put it down with the boys. By the time I got there, it was almost done. The sounds [engineer Reinhold] Mack managed to get were very elemental, real ambient sounds made it sound big. Everything about it is original rock ‘n’ roll sounding.”
Drummer Roger Taylor remembers it as the first thing the band ever recorded in Munich. He said it took less than half an hour to lay down, and they were all pleased both with how it sounded and with the success it had. It’s an unusual song for Queen, but fans loved it nonetheless. When the band played it live, it was a special moment, since it was the only occasion on which Freddie Mercury played the guitar. While he only played a couple of chords, his stage presence was still imposing and enthralling. He seemed to mimic Elvis’s stage presence during the performance, not copying him but clearly emulating and honoring him both with his movements and his voice.
