An animated format gives much more creative liberty, and Disney has certainly known how to seize this. Among the best Disney animated TV shows of all time are Recess, Phineas and Ferb, and Kim Possible, with most shows having proper endings. However, among them is a mystery show that, although it had a good ending, deserves a reboot: Gravity Falls.
Gravity Falls Is One Of Disney’s Best Animated Shows Of All Time
Created by Alex Hirsch, Gravity Falls is an animated fantasy mystery comedy show that aired on Disney Channel from 2012 to 2016. Gravity Falls introduces viewers to 12-year-old twins Dipper (voiced by Jason Ritter) and Mabel (Kristen Schaal), who travel from California to the town of Gravity Falls to spend the summer with their great uncle, Stan.
However, the town of Gravity Falls hides many dark secrets, which Dipper and Mabel decide to investigate after Dipper finds a mysterious journal detailing the strange paranormal creatures and incidents in town. Dipper and Mabel are accompanied by Soos, Wendy, and Grunkle Stan, too, who knows a lot more about those secrets than the twins expected.
Gravity Falls was a big success with critics and general audiences, being praised for its tone, creativity, mythology, characters, and themes, as amid all the fantasy creatures and jokes, are themes like guilt, family, love, loyalty, and more.
Even though it’s just two seasons, the story of Gravity Falls is perfectly developed and gives its characters the development they need, and it’s packed with details that keep the audience engaged from beginning to end. However, the show proved that this universe has a lot of stories to tell, and with Stan and Ford setting out on new adventures at the end, there’s a lot of potential for a reboot.
Why Gravity Falls Season 3 Didn’t Happen
Despite its success and the richness of its unique universe, Gravity Falls only stayed for two seasons. Unlike many other Disney shows that were unfairly canceled early during their run, Gravity Falls was planned to be only two seasons long. When the end of Gravity Falls was announced in 2015, Hirsch himself explained that’s how he had envisioned the show (via Variety).
As disappointing as Gravity Falls ending after two seasons was, this highlights one of the show’s biggest strengths. Gravity Falls is a cohesive, well-developed TV show precisely because Hirsch knew exactly when and how to end it. Surely, it would have been interesting to see what else the town of Gravity Falls had to offer, but Hirsch told the story that he wanted the way he wanted to.
Gravity Falls Might Be Getting A Worthy Replacement
At the time of writing, there are no plans for a new season of Gravity Falls or a reboot, but the world of Dipper and Mabel has continued to expand in books, with the most recent one, The Book of Bill, published in 2024. However, it seems like Gravity Falls is about to get a worthy replacement and potential spiritual successor.
A new book, The Art of Gravity Falls, will be published on September 15, 2026.
An animated series titled Clara & The Below is now in development, led by Gravity Falls storyboard artist and animator Matt Braly. What’s known about Clara & The Below so far is that it’s set in a world with supernatural elements, with the story focusing on different mysteries, which sounds very fitting with Gravity Falls.
Clara & The Below is a crowdfunded project, and the first episode is scheduled to be released on YouTube (for free) on December 25, 2026. Although the show is still in its early stages, it’s possible that it could be picked up by a big studio that can give it a bigger platform and the funding it needs for its planned four parts.
Gravity Falls is more than deserving of a reboot, or, at least, a special episode that shows what Dipper, Mabel, Stan, Ford, Soos, and Wendy have been up to, but until then, there’s another show coming up with the potential to fill in the void it left.
