A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Is Officially Keeping Its Biggest Promise After Season 2 Update

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ debut season came to an end just over a month ago, but season 2 won’t be far behind. The Game of Thrones spinoff, which also serves as an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, quickly became a massive hit for HBO. Thankfully, the network greenlit A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 before the series even premiered.

Whereas A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 adapted The Hedge Knight, following Duncan the Tall and his young squire, Egg, at the Ashford tournament, season 2 is set to bring The Sworn Sword novella to the small screen. In fact, the cast and crew of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms have almost finished filming the upcoming installment.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Season 2 Is On Track For A 2027 Release

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 ending

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1’s finale aired on February 22, 2026. Now, there’s word that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 will soon wrap filming, with reports suggesting that that stage of production is slated to end in June. The follow-up installment notably started filming in December. Most importantly, however, is that the production schedule is on track for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 to release in 2027.

Renewing season 2 before the show even aired on HBO surely gave A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms a head start, but it also shows how much faith HBO is putting into the series. The Dunk and Egg prequel series officially marks the third Game of Thrones show for HBO, but fans of the franchise are no longer accustomed to quick turnarounds based on Game of Thrones season 8 and House of the Dragon.

Back in January, HBO CEO Casey Bloys shared (via Deadline) that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was intended for an annual release format, with the expectation for season 2 to arrive in early 2027. The filming update for season 2 further supports the fact that HBO is keeping its annual release promise for the series. In fact, other HBO shows are already following the strategy, like the case with The Pitt season 2’s January premiere following the show’s January 2025 debut.

Why A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Has The Perfect Setup For Yearly Releases

Considering Game of Thrones‘ massive scope as a fantasy franchise, it’s initially hard to believe an annual release format is plausible for the long-term. Granted, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the perfect candidate for yearly releases. Considering the show is based on GRRM’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, each season is based on a short, compact story.

With the adaptation of The Hedge Knight, season 1 effectively told the story in just six episodes that ranged from 31 to 42 minutes each. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ season 2 story will follow the same format, with six episodes and shorter episodes compared to Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Therefore, the production timeline will continue to give HBO a better chance at fulfilling its annual release promise, barring any unforeseen delays.

Even though there are only three published Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms can (and almost certainly will) continue beyond season 3. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms running 12-15 seasons may not be a reality after it was suggested by showrunner Ira Parker. Granted, keeping up with an annual release schedule, in addition to the development of more Game of Thrones projects, can give the franchise a chance to continue serving as a pillar of HBO’s programming.
