A New Kong Is Coming To The Monsterverse

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, episode 3!A new Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 theory suggests another version of Kong is coming to the Monsterverse, and will be introduced very soon. Monarch season 2 has primarily focused on the revival of Titan X, a massive, threatening monster that escaped Axis Mundi after Cate opened a portal between worlds to rescue Lee Shaw.

However, Monarch‘s major characters have also been dealing with a rise in power from Apex Cybernetics. The end of Monarch season 1 confirmed the company had partnered with the titular organization for studies on Skull Island. While the reasons for their research are still wrapped in mystery, one theory suggests they’ll be responsible for an old Kong villain debuting in the Monsterverse.

Apex Cybernetics Might Be Making Mechani-Kong

In Monarch season 2, episode 3, Tim approaches May and recruits her as a mole inside Apex. Given she’d already been offered a high-end job at the company, coupled with her previous history working for them, she makes the perfect spy for Monarch to find out what their long-term goals are. Despite initially not wanting to, May agrees.

Despite the mystery Monarch appears to be building around Apex, Monsterverse viewers are already keenly aware of what their end goal is. As seen in Godzilla vs. Kong, Monarch is building Mechagodzilla, a robotic version of Godzilla, to take out the King of the Monsters so humans can have total control over the Titan ecosystem.

Yet Monarch hasn’t reached Godzilla: King of the Monsters yet in the Monsterverse timeline. Couple this with Apex’s mysterious Skull Island research and how easy an answer Mechagodzilla would be, and it seems like they have another secret they’re hiding. This makes the perfect candidate for their secret project an old King Kong villain from the 1960s: Mechani-Kong.

Mechani-Kong’s History Explained

Mechani-Kong was first introduced in the 1966 American animated series The King Kong Show, but is best known for his live-action debut in Toho’s 1967 film King Kong Escapes. In both iterations, Mechani-Kong is a mechanical version of King Kong created by the mad scientist Dr. Who. The doctor plans to use this robotic version of Kong to conquer the world.

Unlike his flesh-and-blood counterpart, Mechani-Kong doesn’t have any autonomy of his own. Instead, he’s a robot commanded by Dr. Who, carrying out orders without question. While his encounters with Kong have been somewhat difficult for the massive ape to deal with, he’s ultimately been defeated in both his TV and movie appearances. Since then, he’s fallen into obscurity.

However, it hasn’t stopped Toho from using the character in a few other projects, albeit not on the big screen. Mechani-Kong appeared in two stories for 1990’s The Godzilla Comic and later had an important role in the 1992 manga series Godzilla: King of the Monsters. However, he’s yet to have been utilized in the 21st century in any meaningful media.

Why Monarch Should Introduce Mechani-Kong To The Monsterverse

Mechani-Kong’s appearance in Monarch season 2 would be the perfect twist reveal for what Apex is really doing on Skull Island. Not only would it explain their interest in Kong, which appeared to be taking shape at the end of season 1, but it would also circumvent the obvious reveal that they’re working on Mechagodzilla.

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova Already Has The Perfect Reason To Introduce Mechagodzilla’s Successor

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova has the right setup to introduce Mechagodzilla’s replacement, just in time for the showdown with SpaceGodzilla.

By avoiding retreading Godzilla vs. Kong‘s reveal about Mechagodzilla, Monarch can lay the groundwork for a compelling season 3 that focuses on Mechani-Kong. The mystery of Apex’s interest in Titan X and Skull Island could be because they’re using Mechani-Kong as a prototype of sorts, a precursor to when they try to mimic the King.

As the story of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 unfolds, it may coincide with a revelation about Apex’s true intentions. If Mechani-Kong does show up, then Monarch season 3 could focus on a Titan that’s already been established in prior canon, allowing for a follow-up that builds upon pre-established Titan lore.

New episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 arrive Fridays on Apple TV.
