Created by Robert Doherty, inspired by the 1987 novel Double Whammy by Carl Hiaasen, ABC’s new crime drama premiered on March 3 and stars Scott Speedman as R.J. Decker, a disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con who starts over as a private investigator in South Florida. Also starring are Jaina Lee Ortiz, Kevin Rankin, Adelaide Clemens, and Bevin Bru.
Currently airing on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. after High Potential, R.J. Decker will move up to the 9 p.m. slot once High Potential finishes its second season on April 7, per Deadline. Like all ABC shows, R.J. Decker will also be available to stream on Hulu the following day.
The change follows a similar pattern to The Rookie on ABC, which also moved from 10 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays last season after launching its seventh season behind High Potential. Earlier this year, Nathan Fillion’s series was shifted to Mondays to accommodate R.J. Decker.
Why R.J. Decker Is Changing Its Release Schedule
Ahead of R.J. Decker‘s 9 p.m. premiere on April 14, ABC will rebroadcast the first three episodes in a row on Thursday, April 9. The move signals strong support from the network and is intended to offer R.J. Decker additional exposure as its season 2 renewal prospects are assessed by ABC.
Will R.J. Decker Be Renewed For Season 2?
Receiving mostly positive reviews from critics, R.J. Decker‘s Rotten Tomatoes score is 75%. While audience reception has also been mostly positive, with fewer than 50 ratings, it doesn’t yet have an audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
After a strong premiere drawing 3.69 million live and same-day viewers, making it ABC’s most-watched 10 p.m. drama debut in over five years, R.J. Decker‘s audience has remained steady and frequently appears on Hulu’s daily top five TV shows. While it hasn’t reached the breakout scale of High Potential, R.J. Decker is showing early promise for a season 2 renewal, though it’s still only three weeks into its run.
