Currently Air India Express is operating flights from Hindon to Mumbai and Bengaluru.
While demand is not a constraint, operational challenges at Hindon, aircraft availability and the upcoming launch of Noida airport are said to have guided Air India Express plans.
The airline did not respond to an email query.
Air India Express website shows flights from Hindon to Bengaluru and Mumbai are available for sale only until March 27 which is the last day of winter schedule.
IndiGo and Star Air will continue to operate from Hindon airport. Data from aviation analytics firm Cirium shows 35 per cent fewer flights have been scheduled from Hindon in April over a month on month basis with IndiGo reducing some of its services.
According to Airport Authority of India, Hindon airport handled 9.6 lakh passengers between April – January. The airfield has two parking bays and a small terminal hindering it’s growth. Occasionally, this also led to aircraft holding 20-25 minutes as bays remain occupied.
Expansion plan
Hindon airport is owned by the Indian Air Force and AAI runs a civil terminal. Passenger flights began from Hindon under the Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (Udan) scheme in October 2019.
AAI has drawn up a plan that would result in expansion of terminal and increase in flight handling capacity at Hindon airport. The authority asked Uttar Pradesh for around 9 acres of land and the state is said to have agreed in principle to acquire 6.5 acres for the expansion.
As an interim measure, the existing terminal is being expanded by 700 square metres. This will help in reduction of congestion and addition of passenger amenities, an official said.
