All 6 Live-Action Green Lantern Costumes, Ranked By Comics Accuracy

While live-action Green Lanterns have historically been rare, DC Studios is attempting to change that with the new DCU. However, it hasn’t been without some controversy, especially following the recent trailer for the upcoming Lanterns series and our first look at what appears to be Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern costume.

In the DC Universe, the Green Lantern Corps serve as an intergalactic peacekeeping force wielding power rings charged with the green light of willpower. Across mediums, the Green Lanterns have worn some of the most recognizable DC Comics superhero costumes.

From lackluster CGI to brand-new designs remarkably devoid of green, here’s our current list of some of the biggest and most recent live-action Green Lantern costumes, ranked by comic-accuracy.

Green Lantern 2011 (Ryan Reynolds)

Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern

15 years later, the bottom of the barrel is still Ryan Reynolds costume from 2011’s Green Lantern movie. Instead of a physical costume, the film relied almost entirely on poor CGI, creating a glowing digital outfit that looked more like an organic alien wetsuit than an actual uniform seen on the page.

Beyond the hard to look at CGI, the texture of the suit was oddly veiny, the mask overly detailed, while also having a lack of gloves or boots. All things considered, the 2011 design felt overly complicated and incredibly artificial, making it one of the worst iterations of the costume we’ve ever seen in live-action.

The Snyderverse’s Green Lanterns (Yalan Gur/Kilowog/John Stewart)

Across the board, Zack Snyder’s DCEU technically featured multiple Green Lanterns, though none received significant screen time and for one, none at all.

Yalan Gur appeared briefly during Wonder Woman’s history lesson about Darkseid in Justice League, wearing a suit that looked more ancient and alien compared to the standard Corps uniform (while still looking pretty cool).

Traditionally the Green Lantern tasked with training new recruits, Kilowog was glimpsed only briefly in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and even then it was just a single shot of his fallen body during Batman’s Knightmare sequence. Although the design seemed fairly comic inspired, the incredibly quick look made judging details pretty challenging.

Zack Snyder also released an image of Wayne T. Carr’s cut version of Green Lantern John Stewart, showing a costume that did look fairly promising. Still, without a full appearance on screen, this version along with the Snyderverse’s alien cameos remain intriguing glimpses rather than definitive and live-action adaptations.

Hal Jordan’s DCU Green Lantern (Kyle Chandler)

The recently released Lanterns trailer offered fans their first look at what looks to be Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern costume in the DCU, albeit in a pretty surprising way: hanging on a rack.

While this does confirm that the suit will be practical and ties back to early comics where Green Lanterns did have physical uniforms they’d take on and off, it does clash with more modern interpretations where the uniform is usually just manifested by a Green Lantern’s ring when needed. Nevertheless, the comic book precedence is there.

Furthermore, the costume’s predominantly brown color scheme has sparked some strong debate online, with many questioning the lack of green in the Green Lantern suit. That said, I strongly believe that the lack of green in both the show’s title and trailer is incredibly intentional, and that the green will gradually be featured as the series progresses.

I definitely see the vision and potential, and as such I’m unwilling to pass full judgment when it comes to the current lack of green based on this single shot of the new DCU costume. Despite the color controversy, the overall design of the actual suit itself does look very close to versions we’ve seen in the comics, particularly the Earth-1 version of Hal Jordan’s uniform.

When and if the green coloring eventually appears in the finished show, and/or John Stewart’s uniform debuts as a newer and fresher iteration with more green, the suit/s could easily become one of the most accurate Green Lantern adaptations yet.

Guy Gardner’s DCU Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion)

When it comes to comic accuracy, I’m willing to argue that Guy Gardner’s DCU costume currently stands as the best live-action Green Lantern suit we’ve seen thus far. Clearly inspired by Guy’s jacket/vest style uniform from the comics, the DCU design does capture the character’s distinctive personality.

However, the main drawback is its color balance. In 2025’s Superman, Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern suit is white with green accents to match the overall Justice Gang aesthetic. Even so, we still get the recognizable Green Lantern logo on the shoulders and belt buckle pulled straight from the comics. It’s also easy to imagine a non-Justice Gang branded version Guy might have originally worn with green as the dominant color.

Time will tell, though I do have high hopes that Hal’s DCU costume and/or John Stewart’s will eventually surpass Guy’s Justice Gang uniform when Lanterns premieres later this year. For now, I do believe Guy Gardner has the most comic-accurate GL style with meaningful live-action appearances.

DC Studios’ Lanterns is set to premiere in August on HBO Max.
