In a new interview with Hits Radio, Andrew Garfield was asked if he would ever want to see his fellow The Amazing Spider-Man co-star, Emma Stone, finally get to bring the Spider-Gwen version of Gwen Stacy into live-action. The British star replied, “Yeah. I mean, why not? Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos,” referencing how Stone starred in the filmmaker’s Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, and Bugonia. He continued sharing how “I think she could do anything. She’s such an incredible actor.”
The last time the two of them starred in a Marvel project together was in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, where Stone’s Gwen had her famous death from the comics brought to the big screen. Garfield ended up reprising his Peter Parker in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, starring alongside Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire’s iterations of the Marvel icon. The triple Spidey team-up adventure ended up grossing over $1.9 billion, making it the highest-grossing film for the Multiverse Saga.
Why A Spider-Gwen Movie Is More Likely To Happen Than Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man 3
While the world has been wanting to see Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 3 happen since 2021, Sony has not indicated that they are interested in bringing his franchise back. However, the possibility of Stone as Spider-Gwen in live-action is actually far more likely, thanks to recent moves by Sony about the future of the Spider-Man property.
Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is officially set to get rebooted by Sony, following multiple box office bombs in the franchise, with villains or minor characters like Madame Web being the focus rather than the web-crawler. Ideally, if they are learning from the success of the animated Spider-Verse movies, the concept of seeing Stone playing an alternative version of Gwen, where she became a Spider-hero, could finally come to fruition.
With Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen, a.k.a. Spider-Woman, eyed to get an animated Spider-Verse spinoff, seeing Stone back after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as a Variant in live-action would capitalize on one of the best stars from Garfield’s franchise, but also let her shine as a Marvel hero. It would also allow Sony to avoid repeating the mistake of the SSU, and instead focus on big Spider-Man characters who are as crucial as Peter.
Currently, Sony is focused on bringing Spider-Man: Brand New Day into theaters this July, while preparing Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse for June 2027. But after that, especially as Marvel Studios finishes their multiverse adventures, whatever version of Sony’s Spider-Man franchise goes forward, it could be the proper timing to explore a hypothetical live-action Spider-Gwen movie.
Seeing Stone as Spider-Gwen could also be a way to bring Garfield’s Spider-Man into the fold through a Spider-Verse story, perhaps visiting her in a world where her Peter died. That feels more doable than The Amazing Spider-Man 3 at this point in time, especially as it would be way easier to fit into Sony’s decision to reboot the SSU with something fresh.
Garfield and Stone’s The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are available through home media release and on streaming.
