In the latest trailer for the show, shared via TV Insider, there’s a possibility that Mary Jo could be leaving the unit. In the first scene of the season finale trailer, Woody (Bobby Moynihan) rushes Gibbs (Austin Stowell)and Randy (Caleb Foote) into the lab. Phil (Ely Henry) asks, “Is Mary Jo transferring to Barrett’s office?” Gibb replies, “We’re trying to stop it,” Gibbs says.
While fans will not find out if Mary Jo actually leaves the show until the show’s air date on Tuesday, March 24, in the previous trailer for the season finale, there is insight about Diane Sterling. She will be doing a part-time role with the unit as a criminal investigator with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), but will keep her romance with Gibbs as she looks to be having some date nights on the weekend.
The CBS synopsis for the season finale episode is: “When the NCIS Regional Director [Toby Huss] tries to transfer Mary Jo [Tyla Abercrumbie], she reconnects with an old friend from Atlantic City to help investigate the roadside deaths of two Marines.”
While Mary Jo’s NCIS: Origins character is in limbo at the moment, there might be some surprises still in store for fans later. “We just adore them, and we knew it would be a treat to see them later on,” Origins executive producer David J. North told TV Insider. “Also for us on Origins, Gina [Lucita Monreal] and I have a plan for certain of our characters, and in some, we don’t want to give away whether they’re still around or alive in 33 years because we want to stick with the plan that we have.”
In the original series, Mark Harmon, who played Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, left NCIS in season 19, episode 4 (2021). He now narrates the prequel and is an executive producer for the original series. As for Mary Jo, she is played by Tyla Abercrumbie, who has been part of the prequel series since the first episode debuted in 2024. The character’s potential departure would mark a significant shift for the overall series and the team dynamics that have been in play since the show began.
NCIS is the longest-running CBS procedural show on the network and has already been renewed for a 24th season.
NCIS: Origins airs Tuesdays, 9:00 pm ET on CBS.
