Ahead of the premiere, showrunner Dario Scardapane spoke about the series’ scope to SFX Magazine, and finally answered some of the fans’ burning questions. Among them is Daredevil’s connection to the broader Marvel Universe, which has been explored in a few cameos over the years. As it turns out, however, despite the past crossovers, Scardapane hopes to keep Daredevil’s focus narrow and concentrated for a reason.
Matt Murdock Will Stick to the World ‘Daredevil’ Has Created
According to Deadline, while Scardapane would be “into” another MCU crossover with major characters from the Avengers, fans shouldn’t be expecting a Spider-Man or Captain America cameo in Daredevil any time soon. “I’d be into it, because I dig the comics!” Scardapane said. “But no… That’s been kind of a fun and challenging thing.”
“We know there’s that huge world out there of the MCU,” he continued. “This corner of it has crossovers. We’ve seen Daredevil in other shows, there are other characters that are going to be popping up in movies and stuff, and that all goes into the larger MCU of it all.” Previously, Cox’s character Matt made cameos in a few MCU projects, including serving as Peter Parker’s lawyer Spider-Man: No Way Home, making a brief flashback in Echo, and appearing in Episode 8 of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. Fisk also appeared in the greater MCU as a villain in the 2021 miniseries Hawkeye.
“The joke we make is, ‘Oh, those guys [the Avengers and such] are uptown – we’re downtown!'” Scardapane explained. “We kind of have a pocket that’s in this world of Hell’s Kitchen, in this world of New York. I always think that maybe these characters take little vacations into the larger world, but the story that we’re focusing on is really granular.” With that said, it seems Daredevil will continue to make the best of the small area of New York they’ve honed in on, and isn’t too worried about the “little vacations” they take beyond it.
The duo discuss why this reboot had to come out swinging, what it means for the future, and tease Season 2.
Season 2 of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Is Around the Corner
Despite keeping its focus focused and “granular,” the second season of Daredevil is already promising another exciting run for viewers. In the teaser trailer alone, the series shows Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) embracing an even darker side of his Kingpin persona and teases Jessica Krysten Ritter‘s long-awaited return as Jessica Jones. “I hope you can walk because I’m not carrying you,” she says to Matt in one clip. Also teased in the trailer is Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) becoming a major ally for Daredevil this season, especially now that he needs all the help he can get to save his city.
After an almost-perfect Season 1, the second season of Daredevil: Born Again has a lot to live up to. But, with Scardapane’s intentional and focused direction, with new returning characters and an old villain getting supercharged, Season 2 of the series has everything to become the next big streaming hit.
