Born Again Season 2, Episode 1 Ending Explained

Warning! This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 1.Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is off to an explosive start with some major reveals and many more questions lined up to be answered throughout the coming season. After the premiere season saw Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk meet again after years apart, season 2 is primed to see their rivalry reach new heights.

At the end of season 1, Matt Murdock donned his Daredevil vigilante costume and prepared to contend with the Mayor of New York. However, getting to the Kingpin is not going to be easy thanks to the introduction of his heavy-handed and brutish militia, the Anti-Vigilante Task Force, aka the AVTF.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 opens with Matt Murdock breaking onto a ship carrying numerous illegal weapons before the crew attempts to sink the ship and the Daredevil. However, episode 1’s ending presents a few more interesting questions to consider regarding what is happening this season, and what is still to come.

Why Is Matt Murdock On The Run In Daredevil: Born Again Season 2?

One of the most shocking moments in Daredevil: Born Again season 1 comes when Matt Murdock, the blind lawyer, puts his life at risk to protect Wilson Fisk, taking a bullet for his rival from the master assassin, Benjamin Poindexter, aka Bullseye.

With that in mind, it may be slightly confusing why exactly Matt Murdock is on the run in the first place. While Matt’s alter ego is not known to the public, Fisk does know about his extracurricular activities. And with the AVTF enforcing Fisk’s martial law, and often simply acting out his whims, Matt is in danger, whether his secret identity is made public or not.

On top of that, Karen Page is a known accomplice of vigilantes like Daredevil and Frank Castle, aka the Punisher. And since the pair are clearly exploring their romantic connection, it makes sense that they should both hide out from the AVTF and protect their anonymity.

Who Is Behind The Mayor Kingpin Mask?

One interesting addition to Daredevil: Born Again season 2 appears to be a new broadcast that is being shared with people across New York. These videos, similar to the BB Report from season 1 in terms of their narrative significance, provide an insight as to the stances of the people of New York, though this show paints a very different picture of New York compared to what is being shown in the new BB Report videos.

Interestingly, the BB Report used to be the beacon of truth in New York, as BB Ulrich helped to shed light on corruption and negativity in the city. Evidently, that show has lost its bite, and now someone in a Mayor Fisk mask has stepped in to create an even more radical and direct series calling out the corruption of the Mayor himself.

While episode 1 doesn’t confirm who is behind these clips, there are only a few people capable of making something like this and motivated enough to push back in this way. At the top of the list are people like BB Urich, Karen Page, and other similar dissidents who want to expose Fisk for his terrible crimes.

When Will Jessica Jones Show Up In Daredevil: Born Again Season 2?

In all the trailers and marketing material, Daredevil: Born Again season 2 has made a lot of noise about Jessica Jones, as played by Krysten Ritter, joining the official MCU and reprising her role from the Netflix Marvel series, where she starred as the no-nonsense, heavy-hitting anti-hero with a tough exterior and a heart of gold.

While this is certainly the case as far as the marketing is concerned, episode 1 makes no reference or allusion to Jessica Jones in a way that suggests she is about to step into the spotlight in this series. Of course, she may show up as early as episode 2, ready to join forces with the other vigilantes and rebels in New York, but she may just as easily join the series in the final episodes of season 2.

As of yet, there is no definitive answer to this question, but the fact that she is seen in numerous scenes in the trailers does suggest her story will need more than an episode or two to be properly fleshed out in the show. And of course, her arrival could also indicate other members of the street-level hero team known as The Defenders making their MCU debut around the same time.

Who Saved Daredevil From The AVTF At The End Of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 1?

In the final moments of Daredevil: Born Again, season 2, episode 1, Daredevil gets into a brief but intense conflict with three AVTF agents who raided Cherry’s apartment. However, with Cherry’s advancing age and the intense violence doled out by Fisk’s cronies against him, Matt is distracted from the fight when he hears Cherry’s heart straining.

The agents got the upper hand, and they ended up unmasking Daredevil when one of the agents recognized him as the runaway lawyer, Matt Murdock. This would have been a shocking enough twist to start the new season, but fortunately for Matt, an unseen ally intervenes at the perfect time, eliminating the agents with incredible precision without ever entering the room.

As Matt lay on the ground, recovering after the attack and the ensuing fight, a knife was thrown into the room, which bounced and landed perfectly within view of Murdock on the ground. The knife features two words, “you’re welcome,” with a logo in the center. This symbol is, of course, Bullseye’s logo.

Evidently, Benjamin Poindexter and Matt Murdock have a lot of history, with intense conflict and rivalry being one of the signature elements of their connection. But it seems as though Poindexter has turned over a new leaf. Or at least he has begun to work alongside Matt to bring to pass the mission to take Fisk and his men out of power.

It’s a certainty that this character will play a significant role throughout this season, though his morals and ultimate goals are difficult to decipher. Whatever the case, Daredevil and Bullseye may have put their differences to one side as they appear to be fighting on the same side in Daredevil: Born Again season 2.
