Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 3.The second season of Daredevil: Born Again has been a welcome return to form for the Man Without Fear. In many respects, the show has recovered the brand of high quality that the original Daredevil series enjoyed, no doubt due, in part, to the prolonged return of stars like Deborah Ann Woll. But Born Again‘s power couple find themselves at a serious crossroads in “The Scales & the Sword,” as Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Karen Page (Woll) clash over how to deal with Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) reign of terror over New York — and the whole thing proves that their romance may be doomed.
‘Born Again’ Puts Matt and Karen on Opposite Sides of a Moral Conundrum
As Matt and Karen hide out, trying to connect Kingpin to the Northern Star, the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen comments on Karen’s perseverance. More specifically, he compares her to Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), who is set to return in both The Punisher: One Last Kill and Spider-Man: Brand New Day later this year. “You’re turning into Frank,” he tells her, to which she replies that they could really use his help about now. This comment throws Matt off, as the Punisher is notorious for killing those in his path — a major source of contention between them in Season 2 of the original Netflix series. “He is effective,” Karen notes, though the off-handed comment sparks a lovers’ spat between them. On the one hand, Matt does not believe that Frank’s methods should be praised or utilized. Karen even acknowledges this when she agrees that killing random Anti-Vigilante Task Force members isn’t the way to go about it, but she has no qualms with “cutting the head off the snake.” Despite Matt’s belief in the legal system, Karen no longer sees how justice can be done or how truth will prevail.

Based on your answers, the Marvel hero who matches your spirit, values, and instincts is…
🕷️ Spider-Man
You carry the weight of the world on shoulders that are younger than they should have to be. Funny, loyal, and endlessly self-sacrificing, you do the right thing not because it’s easy — but because no one else will. You understand that responsibility isn’t a burden you choose; it’s one that finds you. Whether it’s a neighbourhood mugging or a multiverse crisis, you show up. Peter Parker’s lesson — that great power demands great responsibility — isn’t a slogan to you. It’s the code you live by, even when it costs you everything.
😈 Daredevil
You fight in the shadows between law and chaos, guided by a fierce moral compass that refuses to let the guilty walk free. Deeply principled and intensely focused, you use every tool available — your mind, your body, your faith — to protect those the system overlooks. You’ve looked into the darkness and chosen not to become it, though the line has never been easy. Matt Murdock’s duality — champion in the courtroom, devil in the alley — mirrors your own: relentless, conflicted, and unwilling to stop.
🤖 Iron Man
Brilliant, driven, and occasionally insufferable — but always the person who solves the unsolvable problem. You lead with your mind and back it up with resources, innovation, and a stubbornness that borders on heroic. You started out looking out for yourself, but somewhere along the way the world became your responsibility. Tony Stark’s arc — from ego to sacrifice — is your arc too. You build, you plan, and when the moment comes, you’re willing to give everything. Because in the end, you’re Iron Man.
💀 The Punisher
You’ve been through fire that would break most people — and it did change you, completely. What’s left is unyielding, relentless, and operating by a code that the world may not agree with but that you’ve forged in grief and conviction. You don’t ask for forgiveness, and you don’t expect gratitude. You see a corrupt, broken world and you’ve decided to do something about it, consequences be damned. Frank Castle’s war is born from love twisted by loss — and so is yours. Uncompromising and unflinching.
⚡ Thor
Powerful, proud, and on a lifelong journey to become worthy of the legend you carry. You lead with strength but have learned — sometimes painfully — that true greatness comes from humility, growth, and protecting others rather than seeking glory. You’re larger than life, yet more vulnerable than you let on. Thor’s story is one of transformation: from arrogant prince to worthy king, from isolated warrior to beloved protector. You bring the storm when it’s needed — and the warmth when it matters just as much.
🛡️ Captain America
You believe in something bigger than yourself — and you fight for it even when the world has moved on and nobody else will. You don’t bully the small guy, and you never stop when it gets hard. Steve Rogers didn’t become a hero when he got the serum — he was always one. So were you. Your strength isn’t in your fists; it’s in your refusal to compromise what’s right, no matter the cost. In a world full of people taking the easy road, you’re the one who picks up the shield and stands up — every single time.

This scene is cleverly bookended by a shot of those who side with the vigilantes being trapped in cages at Fisk’s warehouse in Red Hook, as well as the kangaroo court conviction of Jack Duquesne/Swordsman (Tony Dalton), who is found guilty of vigilante activity. Despite Matt’s firm belief that the legal system can be saved, we can see that Karen, too, has a point. After all, not only does Fisk’s Task Force operate beyond the legal parameters of the NYPD, but not giving American citizens their due process (or allowing for jury trials) reinforces the mayor’s power over the Big Apple. It’s not legal, and yet the legal system itself seems to have no trouble allowing it. Of course, the power that Kingpin wields isn’t absolute. Conversely, Matt also has a point in suggesting that checks and balances (such as NY Governor Marge McCaffrey, played by Lili Taylor) will help them attack this from a legal perspective.
But where this debate really sparks trouble for Matt and Karen is the foundation of their respective arguments. Karen’s troubled past has helped inform her of this point of view (not to mention her time on The Punisher), while Matt’s Catholic faith forces him to cling to the belief that all men, even Fisk, deserve the right to live. Of course, Karen doesn’t share that same religious conviction, but it’s so foundational to Matt’s entire worldview that he cannot help but fight for the lives of even his sworn enemies. It’s no wonder he took a bullet for Fisk at the end of last season. So, while their outlooks on the effectiveness of the law are paramount to how they tackle Kingpin, it’s their different core beliefs that present the real challenge between them.
Matt and Karen Have a History of Being on Different Sides of the Debate
This debate, of course, isn’t new. Anyone who’s watched previous seasons of Daredevil knows that Matt and Karen have been at odds about this issue before, only on different sides. Back in Season 3 of Daredevil, Matt was hell-bent on killing Fisk, but it was Karen who stood in his way. She knew that the moment he crossed that line, she would lose him forever to the mask. Her resistance helped Matt to recover his faith and remember the inherent value of life, choosing instead to spare Kingpin. But now, after Foggy’s (Elden Henson) death pushed them both over the edge, Matt is returning once more to his old convictions, while Karen has taken another line out of Punisher’s playbook, deciding that the ends may just justify the means. They continue to dance around the same issue.
But Matt’s faith in the justice system isn’t simply a hope for legality to prevail. While he sees the corruption going on around them, he still believes that the system itself must work, because anything other than that would be chaos. Karen may not have that same worldview, but her wrestling with Matt’s convictions proves that she is receptive to her old point of view. Deep down, they both know that killing Fisk will only make things worse, even if it seems to be the only option.
