Recently, both showrunner Dario Scardapane and lead star Charlie Cox have addressed where the series will head next and whether Daredevil will truly see the end of his nemesis. Played by Vincent D’Onofrio, Fisk has long been Matt’s number one foe, and his latest arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series has seen the villain become mayor of New York City. However, it seems his ambitions may come crashing down by the end of Born Again season two.
“Every time I say something, there [are] repercussions,” Scardapane told The New York Times. “So, Parts one and two of this current story, where Fisk becomes the mayor and Matt leads the resistance—that dynamic comes to a place that is inevitable.” Despite that arc having a conclusion, the writer has made it clear that season two of Born Again is “not the end of Fisk’s story in any way, shape, or form.“
“There are a few comic book runs that are part of the lore, and we take bits and pieces of those, mash them up and use them as inspiration,” Scardapane continued. “It’s all part of the larger story of Matt Murdock’s struggle with being someone who has such respect for the law and breaks it on a regular basis.”
For his part, Cox has also shared his take on Kingpin’s MCU future. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, he shared that Born Again season three “feels like [the show has] shed the skin of the Mayor Fisk era” and is “a new book, a new dawn a little bit.“
“It’s still a continuation, obviously, but it’s slightly different,” Cox said. Scardapane previously discussed this as well, explaining how season three keeps up the “continuum” of the series while not being as interconnected as the first two seasons:
“Season one and season two are Part one and Part two. It feels that way. I think there’s also a Part three to that story, but I need to be very quiet about that. The ballad of Fisk and Murdock has, in my mind, an ebb and flow. In season one, Fisk is triumphant. In season two, it ends in a manner that there are consequences for each of those characters. We talked earlier about how [in] season two, Fisk is fully Kingpin and Murdoch is fully Daredevil, and there’s a consequence to that, and that’s where we’re heading next.”
To that end, Scardapane has insisted that Daredevil and Kingpin will continue their rivalry in the MCU: “You know, the story never ends with these two.” The writer previously teased that the Mayor Fisk arc of Born Again would likely wrap up in season two, and recent casting news for Spider-Man: Brand New Day all but confirmed as much.
Regardless, Kingpin is too central a figure in Daredevil’s story to disappear completely, and he is far from the kind of antagonist to stay down, making his MCU return all but inevitable. New episodes of Daredevil: Born Again release on Tuesdays at 9:00pm ET only on Disney+.
