Sony recently debuted the first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, showcasing how this will be a very different story for the web-slinger, as Tom Holland spoke about the movie’s plot in a new Empire State Building interview. The British star stressed that “I think the movie feels, tonally, like a fresh start.” According to the MCU veteran, who has been with the franchise since his debut in Captain America: Civil War, “What Peter Parker is going through post ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ is really profound and unique to the superhero genre.”
Holland, who was last seen in the MCU timeline in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, explained that this is “a movie about when young people really find their identity and become adults.” Following his trilogy exploring Peter’s teenage years while navigating his superhero life, the Spider-Man: Brand New Day arc will tackle his young adult chapter, as the actor continued, “Having been through that as a person, it really gave me a great insight into how to bring Peter Parker to life with this new chapter that he’s embarking on.”
Why Brand New Day Is A New Chapter For Tom Holland’s Spider-Man
The Spider-Man: Brand New Day story takes place four years after the events of the last film, which means a lot has happened in between – off-screen, obviously – and that means a lot of change for Peter as both a superhero, but as a regular person. Someone who is now in his 20s versus being in his adolescence will naturally bring a tonal shift, as Holland’s hero will have other problems to tackle that he didn’t have when he was in high school.
While there have been many Spider-Man movies over the last two decades, it’s key to remember that the MCU’s take on the Marvel icon is the only one to have been able to go through the high school era in three films, and now see Peter stepping into the realm of adulthood. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions were depicted as being in their senior years and entering the college era.
Where Brand New Day Fits In The Larger MCU Timeline Ahead Of Avengers: Doomsday
Even though it’s unknown if Holland will be back as the beloved superhero in Avengers: Doomsday, it’s clear that the film takes place before the massive team-up entry. The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer strongly indicates that it is happening after the events of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, as Peter can be seen getting the key to the city, as Mayor Wilson Fisk (who also can’t appear in MCU films yet due to complexities surrounding the Kingpin rights) is nowhere to be seen.
During production in 2025, Spider-Man: Brand New Day set photos had in-universe signs that a new building in the MCU’s New York has “Anticipated Completion: December 2027,” listed, and with Avengers: Doomsday slated for the end of 2026, it’s clear the Phase 6 installment is after Holland’s film. The larger question is whether or not the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film will plant any seeds for Anthony and Joe’s highly anticipated MCU entry.
