Brand New Day Trailer, Lanterns Controversy, And More

Because we’re often getting new superhero movie and TV updates every day, we’ve decided to round up all the biggest pieces of news in one place with Super Rant’s Weekend Post-Credits, our ongoing series covering the most exciting MCU and DCU news at the end of every week.

Featuring new teasers, posters, actor comments, updates from James Gunn, and more, Super Rant has assembled everything you need to know about what’s coming next in the MCU/DCU. Without further ado, here’s our Weekend Post-Credits for March 16th-22nd.

MCU News: Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer, Daredevil: Born Again, And More

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer Is Finally Released — Naturally, the biggest piece of MCU news this week was the release of the first trailer for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Revealing a new era for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, the trailer confirms major status quo changes for Spider-Man’s powers, fallout from Spider-Man: No Way Home, key allies like The Punisher and Hulk, and even returning MCU villains like Scorpion and The Hand. That said, there are still plenty of surprises to come, including Sadie Sink’s character and the movie’s ultimate villain.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Unique 24-Hour Release Strategy — 24 hours before the full trailer’s release, fans from all over the world were given 2 seconds of the Brand New Day trailer to release on their socials. Basically, a new 2-second clip was released every hour for 24 hours to build up the hype. Clearly, that strategy succeeded, considering Brand New Day’s trailer broke the record for the most first-day views (over 700 million).

Marvel’s Upcoming Punisher Special Runtime Revealed — Beyond his appearance this year in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Frank Castle’s Punisher will also be starring in his own MCU Special on Disney+. Now, this week has revealed that the special will have a runtime of 60 minutes, the longest MCU Special yet. Werewolf by Night is 53 minutes long, while The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is 42 minutes.

Charlie Cox Reacts To Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer — Thanks to his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel the same day as the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer’s release, Charlie Cox was naturally asked about a potential appearance by Daredevil in the upcoming MCU movie following Daredevil: Born Again season 2 (which premieres next week):

Naturally, Charlie Cox denied his involvement in Brand New Day, while also confirming that even if he was in the new Spider-Man movie, he’d still say he wasn’t (bringing back memories of Andrew Garfield’s similar responses about his return as The Amazing Spider-Man ahead of 2021’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day).

RDJ & Chris Evans Reunite At The Oscars Before Doomsday (With Channing Tatum) — Last weekend, the Oscars saw Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans reuniting ahead of Avengers: Doomsday as award presenters, accompanied by The Avengers theme along with some fun Marvel banter. Likewise, part of their bit included Channing Tatum sitting in the audience, who will be returning as Gambit in Doomsday.

Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio Reveal Daredevil and Kingpin’s Thunderbolts Shame Rooms — In an interview with The Direct, Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio were both asked what Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk’s “Shame Rooms” would be during The Void’s attack on New York as seen in 2025’s Thunderbolts*.

While Cox guessed that Murdock’s shame room likely had to do with regrets over the death of Foggy Nelson and not seeing certain warning signs, D’Onofrio cited that Fisk’s shame room would likely have to do with Wilson murdering his father as a young boy. Both answers feel super solid and quite likely.

DCU News: Lanterns Controversy, Supergirl Timeline, And More

HBO’s New Lanterns Show Creator Responds To Backlash — After making a joke on a comedy podcast that the green was taken out of Lanterns because it was “stupid”, the DCU show’s Damon Lindelof issued a public apology post online following widespread criticism, including from DC Comics legend Grant Morrison himself:

Damon Lindelof Statement on Lanterns

Following the release of the controversial Lanterns trailer (which was largely devoid of green as well), one can only hope that the show will gradually introduce the signature color and more fantastical elements from the original comics as the DCU series progresses.

It would certainly be cool to see the more grounded True Detective-style series evolve into something far more cosmic. After all, why would Hal Jordan and John Stewart be investigating a murder in the American heartland if there wasn’t some sort of intergalactic connection?

DCU Booster Gold Series Update — Following rumors that the Booster Gold series in development had potentially been canceled, showrunner David Jenkins (Our Flag Means Death) confirmed on social media that, as far as he knows, the upcoming series is still in development with DC Studios.

Without a doubt, the time-traveling hero Booster Gold is one of DC’s most fascinating and hilarious heroes. One can only hope that his DCU series is indeed still on track.

James Gunn Confirms Supergirl’s Place In The DCU Timeline — This week also saw DC Studios’ head James Gunn confirming that the bulk of this year’s Supergirl movie will be set between the events of 2025’s Superman and 2027’s Man of Tomorrow. That said, it’s clear from the trailers that there will still be some key flashbacks to the destruction of Krypton in the DCU, as well as the temporary preservation of Argo City.

Justin Hartley Talks About Reprising His Green Arrow Smallville Role — Thanks to Netflix, the classic DC series Smallville has been seeing a major worldwide resurgence in views. As such, a recent interview with the CW’s original Green Arrow actor Justin Hartley saw him confirming that he would love to play a superhero again: “I’d like to jump back into that Green Arrow suit. Maybe not that exact suit, but something a little hipper.”

The DC Universe is one of the biggest comic book franchises and often competes with Marvel. DC Comics started as National Allied Publications, founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1935. Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
