After Spider-Man: No Way Home brought back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men and villains from their solo movies, Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s cast was put together with the intent of delivering a new entry that is just as exhilarating as what came before. That includes an excellent batch of villains, who fans have now seen a snippet of in the trailer.
The most anticipated villain for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is easily Michael Mando’s Scorpion. After playing Mac Gargan in Spider-Man: Homecoming, all the way back in 2017, the character has been absent from the MCU. That changes in a big way in the upcoming film. The first Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer showcases Gargan’s return, now wearing a technological Scorpion suit.
While Peter Parker is undergoing a mutation of sorts in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Gargan will be on a different path, using technology to become Scorpion. With no helmet, the design looks like a more advanced version of Scorpion’s suit in Marvel’s animated Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Aside from Scorpion, three other villains appear in the trailer.
Fans can see quick shots of Boomerang, Tarantula, and The Hand in the footage. The first two look like near-perfect adaptations of the characters from Marvel Comics, with the main differences being the symbols on their chests and the fact that both Boomerang and Tarantula’s designs have been modernized. Still, their classic suit designs and color schemes remain.
Finally, the group of red ninjas seen at the end of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer has to be The Hand, who MCU fans will recognize from Netflix’s The Defenders Saga. This time around, The Hand gets even more vibrant red costumes than before, going for a comics-accurate approach. While reported for the MCU movie, Tombstone is absent from the trailer.
Based on his history in the MCU, with Mac Gargan being last seen wanting to find out who Spider-Man was and kill him, I believe that it is safe to say that Scorpion will have the biggest role out of the villains shown in the trailer. Boomerang, Tarantula, and The Hand all feel like smaller players used in sequences to show what Spider-Man has been up to.
Tombstone’s absence from the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer also suggests that Marvel and Sony are choosing to hide him for now, which makes him look like the villain pulling the strings from the shadows. Will that be true? It remains to be seen, as a character who can mind-control people is also teased in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer.
