With the first MCU Spider-Man trilogy very clearly carrying its status as the Home trilogy on its sleeve – thanks to the names of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home – there’s been some natural curiosity about how the next era of Spider-Man’s movie story might label itself. That said, the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer already seems to hint at what this next trilogy title could be.
The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer is interesting not just for the glimpses it gives us into Peter’s life following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, but also because it comes complete with a voice-over that adds extra intrigue to what we see, particularly because it states that spiders have three life cycles, which appears to directly tie in with Peter’s genetic mutations further developing over the film’s story.
That said, perhaps the most key line here is when the trailer’s voice-over states in some of the final and most climactic moments of the trailer that “for those spiders who make it through, it amounts to a kind of… rebirth“. The final word is given particular focus with a dramatic pause to separate it from the rest of this voice-over, and appears in the trailer over a crucial-seeming shot of an unmasked Peter’s eyes going all-black while he fights the Hand.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is all about this new beginning of sorts for its hero, and any future films are sure to follow along the same lines given the positive reception Brand New Day has received for putting its Peter Parker in a set of circumstances that more closely reflect the comics than his previous MCU appearances.
As such, the “Rebirth trilogy” feels as though it could be a fitting name for the next era of Spider-Man’s MCU run. It’s also one of few prospective titles that could best reflect the in-universe and out-of-universe contexts the hero finds himself in for this era of his on-screen story, which would make it seem an especially wise choice overall.
One of the most contentious calls the MCU has made with Spider-Man up to this point has been the decision to focus not on the conventional Peter Parker we’re used to in the comics – who is generally either a fully grown adult or a young adult, and either way is forced to try and balance his work and studies alongside his vigilante double-life – with the MCU instead starting out with a younger Peter Parker.
However, this does seem as though it can pay off for the next stage of Spider-Man stories, by having laid a more substantial framework to make this more traditional era of Peter’s life as interesting and earned-feeling as possible. With this in mind, labeling the next era of Spider-Man’s MCU movie stories the Rebirth trilogy seems as though it could be a perfect reflection of fan hopes while also effectively describing what seems to be happening for the hero in this period of his in-universe life.
Overall, with Spider-Man sure to stay a central figure in the MCU for the foreseeable future, focusing on his new beginnings by labeling this next era of his movie story the Rebirth trilogy seems as though it would be a pertinent move, and one that could best describe the next time period we appear to be moving into. That said, given the effort that’s gone into constructing the narrative of Spider-Man’s MCU story thus far, whatever title the next leg of the hero’s journey obtains is sure to be a well thought-out and fitting one.
