However, the new TV show’s much longer format has the potential to capture every detail of the original novels, creating a more faithful adaptation than the movies could ever be, and satisfying fans left disappointed by the franchise’s big-screen omissions. In fact, it’s already been revealed that some scenes not in the movies will feature in HBO’s TV reboot.
Still, there are some concerns around the series. The revival of popular franchises for television is nothing new, but the sheer volume of IP that’s been recycled in recent years has given reboot shows a bad name. In fact, major movie and TV studios are often perceived to be prioritizing risk-free, big-money projects over telling new stories.
In addition, Harry Potter creator J. K. Rowling’s outspoken views on trans rights have seen her fall from public favor, and led some fans to renounce their affinity for the franchise. Despite these concerns, the TV show should still attract a huge audience when it debuts on HBO, and every announcement around its release is major news.
HBO’s Harry Potter Show Is Confirmed To Release Christmas 2026
On March 25, 2026, HBO announced the release date of their Harry Potter TV show, which will premiere worldwide on Christmas Day of this year. When December 25 comes around, the series will debut on HBO in the United States, and HBO Max in all countries.
This announcement came at the end of the show’s first trailer, running contrary to expectations that it was going to arrive in 2027, instead. It serves as the culmination of a three-year process of development and production, beginning with a tweet posted by HBO Max on April 12, 2023, officially confirming the Harry Potter TV show.
In June 2024, crucial behind-the-scenes crew members were hired, including showrunner Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, who will be directing several episodes of the upcoming first season. Casting began in September 2024, and the lead actors were announced nine months later.
HBO’s Harry Potter series is no longer a Max Original but will instead be considered an HBO Original. However, it will still stream on Max after airing on HBO.
The Cast Of The Harry Potter TV Show
During the course of 2025, there was a steady stream of updates confirming the cast of HBO’s Harry Potter series. They began last April, with the revelation that John Lithgow (Dexter) will be playing Hogwarts Headmaster, Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer (Kaos) is Professor McGonagall.
At the same time, Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) was confirmed as the prickly potions professor, Severus Snape, and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz) in the role of lovable groundskeeper, Hagrid. Luke Thallon (A Room with a View) was also announced as the actor playing Professor Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show) as Hogwarts caretaker, Argus Filch.
Producer and showrunner Francesca Gardiner announced the casting of these six actors, alongside producer and director Mark Mylod. Their statement read:
“We are happy to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse to play Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell and Filch. We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.”
There’s no question that the HBO recast has been probably the greatest challenge of the series so far, especially when it came to recasting fan-favorite characters that were played by actors who have passed on. The late Robbie Coltrane was the perfect double of Hagrid, while Alan Rickman’s Snape performance was truly iconic.
The choice of Paapa Essiedu to play Harry’s Hogwarts tormentor-in-chief, in particular, has generated division and controversy among the franchise’s fanbase. Sadly, the actor has even faced racist abuse online from some of those unhappy with his casting (via The Times).
As well as the adults, some of the hardest characters to recast in the Harry Potter TV show were the golden trio themselves. For generations of viewers, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are synonymous with Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson.
Nevertheless, in May 2025, HBO announced that they’d cast their new Harry Potter trio. Westend theater star Arabella Stanton is playing Hermione Granger, while acting newcomer Alastair Stout is playing Ron Weasley. Meanwhile, 11-year-old Dominic McLaughlin from Scotland is the new Harry Potter.
Later in the same year, the actors portraying other supporting characters were confirmed. Lox Pratt is Harry’s initial nemesis Draco Malfoy, Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd) is playing Ron’s mother Molly Weasley, and Daniel Rigby and Bel Prowley will be Harry’s Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia, respectively.

Harry Potter Season 1’s Story Details & Official Trailer
The first trailer for HBO’s Harry Potter series has predictably divided fans of the franchise. Although many have commented positively on the inclusion of book scenes excluded from the movies, and the show’s darker depiction of life with the Dursleys, others have lamented elements they consider to be worse than the big-screen version they grew up with.
Beginning with a voiceover from Aunt Petunia as Harry is thrown into the cupboard under the stairs, much of this two-minute trailer focuses on the titular protagonist’s life among muggles before he discovers he’s a wizard, including scenes in his primary school. Nick Frost’s Rubeus Hagrid also features prominently, as do Alastair Stout’s Ron and and Arabella Stanton’s Hermione.
At the same time, the trailer leans into remakes of classic scenes from the movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. We catch glimpses of the Sorting Hat, Harry’s first meeting with Ron and Hermione on the Hogwarts Express, and Ollivander’s wand shop.
Still, it’s likely that we’ve barely seen anything yet. The Harry Potter HBO television show can offer much more time to explore supporting characters, flesh out the main ones, and depict fan-favorite scenes from the books that could not be shown in the films. It will have the chance to fix some mistakes of the Harry Potter movies, too.

Though the books will serve as the main inspiration, it has also been confirmed that the series will call upon new Harry Potter source material as well. Namely, the HBO original is looking to incorporate elements introduced in the hit video game, Hogwarts Legacy.
It was this game which proved that the franchise could be expanded by someone other than J.K. Rowling. Details are scant, but this news does address concerns that the HBO series is a cynical remake that doesn’t add anything new.
On the other hand, HBO has shown itself to be diligent in respectfully adapting source material, so the story from the Harry Potter books should remain the same. Harry’s journey from a lonely orphan into the hero who saves the world from Voldemort will be the core of the show.
Yet, it’s the small moments of magic and wonder that will make the Harry Potter TV show so special. Those moments of Harry and his friends discovering something truly amazing and giving the audience a unique experience is what the HBO show will be able to put on screen better than anyone has before.
J. K. Rowling’s Involvement In HBO’s Harry Potter Series Explained
A controversial aspect of HBO’s Harry Potter TV show has been author J. K. Rowling’s involvement in the project. It has been confirmed that HBO is collaborating with the franchise creator on its TV reboot. A statement released on J.K. Rowling’s website confirmed that she’s working on the project as an executive producer, alongside Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts.
Rowling has become a controversial figure in recent years thanks to her outspoken views on trans people. The J.K. Rowling anti-trans controversy could be a key obstacle facing the upcoming HBO Harry Potter TV show.
Her involvement in other Harry Potter projects like the Hogwarts Legacy gamehas even led to fan boycotts. Only time will tell if the Harry Potter HBO show will face the same issue, although the commercial success of Hogwarts Legacy likely mean that Warner Bros. is confident the series can still be a hit even with Rowling on board.
What Daniel Radcliffe Has Said About The Harry Potter TV Series
While this HBO series is a complete reboot and unrelated to the blockbuster movie franchise, many in the Harry Potter fandom still want to see Daniel Radcliffe return. Radcliffe’s 2023 comments regarding the Harry Potter TV show gave a definitive answer to speculation about his return to the story that made him famous.
The actor confirmed that he wouldn’t be part of the project, but said he’s very excited to see what the new show’s cast would be doing. His full comment can be read below:
“I certainly haven’t. I mean, I don’t, I think it’s very much like they’re going for a new series and it would be, there would be somebody else playing Harry. So I think it would be very weird for me to show up. I’m very, you know, I’m very excited to see what other people do with that. And I think the thing, you know, the comparison I’ve made is like to a story like ‘Sherlock Holmes.’ You know, it was always gonna, I think the Potter series of books was always going to be bigger than like one interpretation or one franchise. So it’ll be cool to like, see the, the torch get passed on.”
In another interview with Variety, Radcliffe stated that he hoped the Harry Potter TV show would satiate fans who were disappointed with the movies. He said that he was happy to be a viewer this time around, and he recognized that there were things cut from the films that angered audiences. Here’s his full quote from the interview:
I’m excited for it as a viewer. I’ll be able to enjoy it with everyone else possibly, with a slightly different perspective. It’s a nice thing that a whole new generation is going to get introduced to the stories in a new way. They’ll see it as a TV series, so they’ll probably have time to go into all the things. So for the people that were angry about things that were cut from the film, hopefully, they will finally be able to see the full version they wanted.
HBO does indeed have an obligation to expand on the plot for the Harry Potter TV show. While many cuts were made for the sake of time, some of these cuts reduced the impact of key reveals and robbed side characters of triumphant arcs.
Peeves the poltergeist was omitted entirely, Voldemort and Dumbledore’s full backstories weren’t included, and the idea that Neville Longbottom could’ve been the Chosen One was never even brought up. The Dursleys’ presences were also muted, and Dudley’s redemption scene was deleted.
HBO’s Harry Potter Show Latest News
In addition to the release of its trailer and confirmation of its Christmas 2026 global premiere, HBO’s Harry Potter series has been subject to other updates and more speculative developments. Most notably, network CEO Casey Bloys has publicly quashed rumors that the show’s Voldemort has already been cast.
HBO’s Harry Potter Remake Can Finally End One Of The Fandom’s Most Heated Debates
It’s been said that there is no good reason for HBO to remake the Harry Potter series, but ending this decades-old debate would be entirely worth it.
Over the past few months, speculation has been swirling that the likes of Cillian Murphy and Paul Bettany have been given modern fantasy’s ultimate villain role. While these rumors have been categorically denied by Bloys, there are bound to be more exciting updates about the new Harry Potter TV show soon.
