It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia debuted in 2005 on FX before later moving to FXX. It quickly established itself as one of TV’s most unapologetic comedies, openly mocking sensitive topics in a good way. The series likely got away with and thrived on not being politically correct because it didn’t take itself seriously. It was also unbiased in a way, as it made fun of absolutely everyone, no demographic is safe. The series stars Day, Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito.
During a conversation with Deadline at SXSW, Day confirmed that production on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 18 is currently underway. The actor also said that the long-running comedy will revisit one of its most memorable episodes involving the awkward members of the disturbing McPoyle family, “The Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre,” which featured Guillermo del Toro as one of the McPoyles’ many relatives, Pappy.
We’re right in the middle of the new season of Sunny right now. I’ve got to go back tonight and I’m going to film tomorrow. We have the McPoyles coming back, and we also have Guillermo del Toro coming back, reprising his role of Pappy McPoyle. It’s going to be a great season.
“The Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre” aired in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 8. In the episode, the dysfunctional group of friends attends the titular character’s wedding to Liam McPoyle (Jimmi Simpson). However, Dee (Olson) and Frank (DeVito) are paid to stop the wedding by the groom’s brother, Ryan McPoyle (Nate Mooney). Dennis (Howerton) tries to thwart their plans, doing everything in his power to make sure the couple get married so he won’t have to pay alimony anymore.
Day added that he believed that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 17 regained the series’ momentum. He stated that the upcoming installment will return stronger than ever. The actor also teased that the new chapter will include several larger-scale episodes compared to previous seasons.
They’re all fairly large episodes. But I feel like season 17, we got a bit of our fastball back, and we brought back the same room and had the same chemistry. So Season 18 here, I think, is going to just pick up right where we left off. I can guarantee there will be some episodes that people will love.
There is currently no official release date for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 18 at the time of this article’s publication. However, many have speculated that it will return in July 2026.
