Chrono Trigger 31st Anniversary Release Officially Unveiled By Square Enix

Square Enix has confirmed a 31st-anniversary release for seminal RPG Chrono Trigger and, while it’s not the remake you’ve been hoping for, it still looks pretty cool. First released in 1995, Chrono Trigger represents a rare collaboration between RPG luminaries of the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest franchises, among others. It’s often ranked among Square Enix’s greatest RPGs, if not the greatest RPGs of all time.

As it celebrates its 31st anniversary this March, Chrono Trigger has planned multiple new releases: a vinyl soundtrack box set, a digital soundtrack, and now, according to Siliconera, a gacha keychain set. A One Mark Collection, this set will include 15 keychains featuring original sprite art from Chrono Trigger.

How to get your hands on the One Mark Collection

The gacha collection features all of Chrono Trigger‘s playable characters (Crono, Marle, Lucca, Frog, Robo, Ayla, and Magus) each in two different poses: a sort of neutral stance and an action pose. There’s also a secret keychain that’s yet to be revealed. The keychains include both rubber straps and metal clips, so you can attach them to just about anything you please.

The keychains will appear in gacha machines across Japan beginning on March 27, and will cost 500 yen (roughly $3.14 USD) per try. It’s unknown as of yet whether they’ll be available overseas, but they’ll likely begin to appear on import sites shortly after release.

Chrono Trigger Fans Are One Step Closer To A Remake… Hopefully

Merch is nice, but fans want more

New merch for a 30-plus-year-old game is always fun. But some fans believe the classic deserves more: many have been clamoring, in recent years, for a full-scale Chrono Trigger remake not unlike Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined.

The idea has its merits: Chrono Trigger does show its age, even if, in my opinion, it holds up incredibly well even 31 years later. I’d love to see Toriyama’s character designs rendered in a 3D style similar to modern Dragon Quest games, and an orchestrated version of the iconic Chrono Trigger soundtrack, as much as the next fan.

Really, I think an updated modern console port would do; the current Steam version has some graphical issues that could be resolved, and it’s worth exploring reincorporating some of the features from the DS version into a new release. But a full-blown remake would be cool in its own way, and it’s certainly a popular wish among the community.

Rumors of a Chrono Trigger remake have surfaced every so often, but Square hasn’t announced anything officially on that front, at least not yet. Still, it’s nice to see Square Enix acknowledging Chrono Trigger‘s anniversary in any way, shape, or form; hopefully, this continued demand for one of its best-ever RPGs leads to a remake or sequel in the near future.
