Inside the Free Color Poem Worksheets

Adrienne Hathaway for We Are Teachers

Students choose one color or multiple colors to reflect on and write about. The color poem printable has two sheets: a brainstorming sheet and a writing template.

Brainstorming Sheet

Using the brainstorming sheet, students choose the color they want to write about and how that color shows up in their lives. What do they see that’s white? How might red “sound”? What words make you think of blue?

Drafting Page

Once students have brainstormed, they can transfer their ideas into their poems. Students can use this template to write that important first draft, then they can transfer their poem (with edits) onto a final product.

How To Use the Color Poem Worksheets

Print, copy, staple, and go! These poem worksheets are great for:

  • Introducing students to poetry writing.
  • Challenging students to write about something they know in new and different ways.
  • Teaching students the writing process, from brainstorm to publish.
  • Discovering what happens when all students are assigned the same color. Who knew so many poems could be written about teal or midnight blue!
  • Creating a back-to-school or holiday bulletin board with poems about the crayon colors, e.g., red and pink for Valentine’s Day or green for St. Patrick’s Day.
  • Teaching students about the primary and secondary colors in art class. Students can incorporate what they know about their colors into their poems.

Why Teachers Love Color Poem Worksheets

With the combination of visuals and writing, these printable worksheets are easy to differentiate across skill and grade levels. The sentence structure on the drafting page is particularly helpful for multilingual learners.

Why Students Love Color Poems

Students are supported through the brainstorming and writing process so they can let their creativity run wild. Once students get going, it’s fun to see what they come up with. Can they create a poem for every color of the rainbow?
