David Tennant Is Officially Returning As The Tenth Doctor After Last Doctor Who Appearance 3 Years Ago

The actor is taking on his original role in the sci-fi franchise following his previous appearance three years ago. The actor made his debut as the Tenth Doctor in season 2 before regenerating at the end of season 4. Tennant’s latest appearance on the cast of Doctor Who was as the Fourteenth Doctor, a reincarnation that shared a physical resemblance to his Tenth Doctor.

Now, Doctor Who has officially confirmed Tennant will be coming back as the Tenth Doctor in a 15-episode audio series. Each episode will be an hour long and voiced by a full cast. The first 12 will be released bi-monthy, starting in August 2027, while the final three will be physically released and feature team-ups with other Doctors.

Titled The Tenth Doctor Adventures, the series will be produced by Big Finish, and can be pre-ordered on their website. According to said pre-order listings, episode 1 will arrive in August 2027, with releases every other month until episode 12 in June 2029. Tennant has also expressed excitement about his return as the Tenth Doctor, saying “Big Finish makes it dangerously easy – you turn up, have a lovely time, and suddenly you’ve saved the universe again.” It will be the actor’s first time doing so since the Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials ended with the Fourteenth Doctor bi-generating into the Fifteenth Doctor.

The Tenth Doctor Adventures arrive as the TV series it’s attached to goes through some major changes. Following the end of Doctor Who season 15, Disney+ opted not to renew their deal with the BBC to help produce and distribute episodes of the series. The show will not be returning until a Christmas special set for release in 2026.

Luckily, the lengthy release window of Tennant’s audio series means there will be plenty of new adventures, regardless of the status of the TV series. Both Tennant and Briggs are excited about how the future will unfold for the Tenth Doctor in audio form. This is made even more compelling by the prospect of other Doctors coming back in the final three episodes.

With The Tenth Doctor Adventures on its way, Doctor Who has cemented audio dramas as a vital part of the franchise. Given the many other Doctor who’ve returned for their own compelling audio drama adventures, it’s clear Big Finish has what it takes to give Tennant’s Tenth Doctor a proper return, with plenty of fun adventures in store.
