If you’ve been keeping up with DC Comics, you know the publisher recently launched Act II of its ALL IN initiative, called DC NEXT LEVEL. This new chapter ushers in brand-new titles, launches new story arcs for ongoing runs, and has also resulted in several revitalizing relaunches.
Among them is DC’s ongoing Titans run, now retitled NEW TITANS to mark the start of its new era, which began March 18 with the release of Tate Brombal and Sami Basri’s New Titans #33. In addition to the retitling, the series has introduced a new version of the team featuring a Superman-led roster.

New Titans is perhaps one of the most self-aware titles DC has ever launched, with issue #33 acknowledging a major flaw in the Teen Titans franchise: repetitiveness in its storylines, foes, relationships, and other narrative elements. The issue essentially unfolds like a Groundhog Day loop, with the Titans living the same repetitive day over and over again.
Brombal weaves a sense of unease throughout the narrative, making it clear that something sinister lurks beneath the monotony of the days Nightwing, Donna Troy, Starfire, Arsenal, Cyborg, Beast Boy, and Raven are living. By the end of the issue, it becomes clear that Brombal plans to shake things up by introducing a new version of the team.
In what seems like a break in reality, the Titans are suddenly greeted by the “New Titans” bursting through their wall. This new team appears to be led by Jon Kent’s Superman, alongside Yara Flor, Stephanie “Spoiler” Brown, and Kid Devil. The issue ends with Jon announcing that the New Titans are there to set the Titans free, though from what exactly remains unclear for now.
Given that the series is now titled New Titans, it is likely that Superman, Wonder Girl, Spoiler, and Kid Devil will become central characters going forward, resulting in a major shake-up of the traditional Titans roster. The big question is whether the two teams will merge or if the New Titans will outright replace the original Titans.

With DC debuting a new team to represent what essentially amounts to the modern-day Teen Titans, it raises the question whether this roster shake-up could be reflected in Gunn’s DCU. The official lineup for the heroes featured in the Teen Titans movie has yet to be announced, and it could very well include some non-traditional members.
James Gunn Debunks Teen Titans Rumors, Hints Still Early In Development
As new Teen Titans movie rumors are emerging, DC Studios’ James Gunn offers an update on what is going on with the big DC Universe team-up film.
James Gunn is known for mixing things up; case in point, his take on Ultraman in Superman, which combined elements of Earth-3’s Ultraman and Kon-El, the clone created by Lex Luthor. This resulted in a completely original version of the character. That said, it is well within the realm of possibility that we’ll get an unexpected Teen Titans roster.
While the team will likely feature core members like Starfire, Raven, Cyborg, Robin, and Beast Boy, there is also a strong possibility that other heroes could be introduced as part of the lineup. This would allow Gunn to expand his DCU while spotlighting new characters, meaning the New Titans roster could extend its influence beyond the comics, with heroes like Kid Devil potentially appearing in the Teen Titans movie.
