The company revealed that an updated version of Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft will be released as Ravenloft: The Horrors Within this Summer, followed by Arcana Unleashed’s two books, one of which is a gameplay expansion, while the other is an adventure module. There will be a lot to look out for, including new subclasses in D&D in 2026, and one of these potential subclasses may become a top-tier choice for fans of Bards who don’t really want to mess around with music.
College Of Spirits Bard Subclass Arrives With D&D’s Ravenloft Book
This Subclass Was Featured In Playtests Last Year
With the upcoming release of the new Ravenloft book later this year, the odds are that the rework for the College of Spirits Bard subclass will be featured in it. The subclass was part of horror-based subclass playtests on D&D’s Unearthed Arcana last year, and given the fact that the subclass was present in Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft in 2021, it’s very likely that its rework will appear this year.
The College of Spirits Bard subclass in D&D is one of the most unique ones, considering most of the options for the archetype are centered around music. This subclass revolves mostly around spiritual tales, granting the Bard different sorts of powers that can be obtained by rolling their Inspiration Dice. The rework seen in UA, which may be changed before it arrives in Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, may feature some significant enhancements to the class, and one of them is a spell.
New Bard’s Subclass Has A Free Spirit Guardians Cast
College Of Spirits Bards May Help Protect Allies In D&D
According to the playtests, this powerful subclass in D&D will see the addition of a new level-6 feat called Empowered Channeling. With it, there are two benefits granted to the College of Spirits Bard. The first is called Power from Beyond, which allows the character to, once per turn, when they cast a Bard spell that deals damage or restores HP, roll a d6. The spell’s damage roll or the restored HP gains a bonus equal to the number rolled.
The most notable part of Empowered Channeling, however, is called Spiritual Manifestation, which makes the powerful Spirit Guardians spell in D&D be prepared at all times. Moreover, College of Spirit Bards get to cast it once without spending a spell slot. When the Bard casts this spell, the spell’s area of Emanation also grants the Bard and their allies Half Cover, which grants them a +2 bonus AC and Dexterity Saving Throws.
Spirit Guardians is an extremely strong resource to have in the TTRPG, as it is a great zone-control spell. It will not only increase the College of Spirits Bard’s survivability by disincentivizing monsters from entering its radius since they are punished with damage, but also help protect them and allies within it. It’s still unclear if what was playtested will make it into the final version of Ravenloft: The Horrors Within.
However, if it does, this spell is going to significantly increase the value of College of Spirits Bards and make them extremely viable for any type of combat-centered campaign. Of course, there are several other changes to this subclass in Dungeons & Dragons, as seen in the playtests, but the ability to cast Spirit Guardians for free with the bonus team support effect is nearly game-breaking.
