Deaths, Secrets, & Reunions Help NBC Deliver The Best Network TV Event In Years

The One Chicago universe once again unites for a special TV event, and this time, NBC nearly perfects the art of crossovers. After Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, and Chicago Med‘s February break, all three show return for an ambitious storyline that requires coordination among the Windy City’s finest first responders. The 2026 One Chicago crossover starts with a mysterious flight tragedy that snowballs into a compelling three-hour story that features important reunions, several deaths, and a big secret from the past.

Crossovers are particularly special for network TV shows that have been on the air for years. Dick Wolf’s NBC franchise used to do it at least every other year, but the COVID-19 pandemic made it difficult to stage a large-scale production with countless talents on set. 2025 resurrected the One Chicago crossover tradition, which had all the familiar and new faces re-acquainted with each other. Just a year later, NBC and Wolf Entertainment are back with another special event that drastically improves on its predecessor.

2026’s One Chicago Crossover Learns From Its 2025 Mistakes

As the major selling point of the 2026 One Chicago crossover titled “Reckoning”, both Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton return to Chicago for the special TV event. This is exciting in a lot of ways, but more so for Chicago PD fans than Chicago Med and Chicago Fire. It gives Intelligence a lot of brilliant moments, including Upton reuniting with Voight and Halstead having some interactions with Burgess and Torres — his one-time mentee before the latter joined the team. Ruzek’s absence is the only thing missing from a golden era reunion for the team. Beyond that, their involvement was an indication that NBC would be going bigger than ever for the TV event. Still, plans are nothing if not properly executed. Luckily the network did.

One of the main issues of the 2025 One Chicago crossover was the lack of true integration among teams. That’s effectively solved in this year’s event. Wolf Entertainment finds a way to pair up people from different corners of the universe, allowing for a fresh mix of factions without feeling like everything is forced. A great example of this is Lennox working closely with Intelligence. This makes it feel like an overall continuous story rather than one with three different parts, and is a more effective way to highlight its appeal as a franchise.

All of this wouldn’t have worked if not for a solid story, however. Admittedly, there will always be characters that will have a smaller role compared to others in crossovers like this. This is usually dictated by what narrative the writers want to tell. Arguably, the people at Gaffney Medical don’t have a collective arc as prominent as the personnel from Firehouse 51 and Intelligence. The 2026 One Chicago crossover makes up for it by having smaller but standout character moments, including Archer and Asher’s conflict about their baby, and Frost’s interactions with Novak and Violet.

Finally, and perhaps the greatest surprise from the crossover is how it effectively established stakes. Opening it with a massive tragedy that shakes even the indomitable Kelly Severide sets up the tone for the rest of the three-hour special event. Impressively, the 2026 One Chicago crossover is able to tackle different kinds of stakes, which helps in maintaining the tension throughout its run without it feeling too overwhelming.

One Chicago 2026’s Crossover Changes Its Winning Formula For The First Time Ever

New details about the 2026 One Chicago crossover confirms that NBC is changing its winning formula for the special for the first time in its history.

Near-deaths for Firehouse 51’s Capp and Cruz — made worse by the unexpected deaths of their fellow firefighters after responding to the cursed plane; Halstead and Upton trying to navigate the fallout from their ugly divorce; Kidd dealing with the death of her first Girls on Fire graduate, and Voight and Pascal coming to terms with a major regret from their past, among others, happen almost simultaneously. All of these and other character moments play out while they race against time to solve the increasingly complicated case.

Crossovers Effectively Highlights The Importance Of One Chicago On Network TV

Arguably, the 2026 One Chicago crossover is the best that the Dick Wolf-produced franchise has come up with thus far. It hits all important aspects for a successful culminating event and is hopefully a sign that NBC will do more of these events moving forward — assuming that all three shows are renewed after the 2025-2026 TV season. Beyond its importance to NBC, however, the 2026 One Chicago crossover is a reminder of the undying appeal of procedurals and network TV.

Both NCIS and Law & Order have had similar endeavors, but they don’t come close to how ambitious it is to unite three different shows for a three-hour event. The last TV event that was as bold and expansive as this one was The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths. It’s worth noting that achieving something rare like this is only possible after years of character work that plays out in countless episodes. As seasons for new shows get shorter, it’s tricky to fully flesh out players to the point that viewers are fully invested in them. The 2026 One Chicago crossover highlights that.
