Do Interspecies Relationships Exist In Zootopia? What It Means For Nick & Judy’s Future

A lot is riding on how Zootopia explores the concept of interspecies relationships, and what it means for the franchise’s future. The first film built its titular city to be a promise and a challenge at the same time, as it used that setting to explore themes around fear, bias, and trust without turning the story into a lecture. The sequel (a $1.7 billion box office hit) had the opportunity to widen that promise. It showed not only that predators and prey can share a workplace and a train car, but that they can share a private life without the city stopping to gawk.

Zootopia 2 delves into this concept perhaps most uniquely when its co-leads Nick (voiced by Jason Bateman) and Judy (Ginnifer Goodwin) go into a case while presenting themselves as a couple, with fenneck fox Finnick posed as their child. When a film opens with a scenario, it is often teaching the audience how to read the world – and indeed, this scene and several others only further raised questions around how interspecies relationships work in the animated film franchise.

Zootopia Doesn’t Disprove Interspecies Romance

Zootopia repeatedly places Nick and Judy in situations that borrow the language of romantic comedy while keeping the relationship officially unlabeled. They pose as a couple for a scheme, and their superior sends them to something literally called “partner counseling.”

In the first movie, the romantic and family snapshots that viewers notice are almost entirely intraspecific. We meet married otters. We see the Hopps family. It’s easy, from that alone, to assume interspecies couples are either rare, discouraged, or simply not part of the world’s everyday fabric.

Even so, the world has one unusually firm signpost pointing in the other direction. Bucky and Pronk Oryx Antlerson, the neighbors in Judy’s apartment complex, are identified in franchise reference material as a married couple. Jared Bush, who voiced Pronk and co-directed and co-wrote the film, confirmed their marriage publicly in 2016, stating:

The sequel’s undercover setup expands that point from existence to social acceptance. Undercover work is about blending in. That is true in spy fiction, and it is true in everyday social reality. This is where Nick’s character becomes part of the logic. Nick is a con artist turned cop who survives on anticipating how strangers will react.

If he is choosing, or even agreeing to, a fox and rabbit couple cover, then either the plan is reckless, or the city’s social norms are broad enough that such a pairing does not automatically trigger suspicion. That said, there are several ways that can be true without requiring interspecies couples to be statistically common. A city can normalize something even if it is not frequent. People can be polite, indifferent, or simply too busy to care.

Cosmopolitan spaces are full of combinations that would be notable in a small town and invisible on a crowded sidewalk. The key question is not whether everyone has seen a fox and rabbit couple before. The key question is whether the average observer sees it as plausible and socially permitted. A disguise needs plausibility more than it needs popularity.

In the licensed comic Quick as a Flash, a sloth named Priscilla Tripletoe is asked out by a hyena. Licensed stories do not always carry the same authority as a film, but they often reflect what the brand considers compatible with the setting. This alone suggests creative leadership does not treat the concept as off limits, which aligns with statements from other creators involved with the franchise.

Zootopia & Zootopia 2 Filmmakers Have Confirmed Interspecies Relationships

Zootopia 2 director and Zootopia writer Jared Bush has further hinted at the existence of interspecies couples, saying, “Yes, I think they do,” when asked about whether they’re part of the universe in an interview. He added, “I can’t see any reason why they wouldn’t exist. The world of Zootopia really reflects human society, and we see all the animals as human beings. With that in mind, I think it makes sense that (interspecies couples) would exist.

In an earlier interview with Mandatory in 2016, fellow Zootopia creators Byron Howard and Rich Moore spoke about Nick and Judy in this context. When asked if a sequel could explore a romance between them, Howard said, “I think it’s beautiful. Better than ok.” Moore agreed, saying, “Yeah, I think so. Who are we to judge?” And when the inevitable question came up — what would their kids be — Howard replied with a playful joke: “Funnies or boxes?

What This Means For Nick & Judy’s Future In Zootopia 3

Disney can keep Nick and Judy as best friendsand partners forever, or it can let their partnership deepen into something explicitly romantic, and either decision fits the world that has been built. Interspecies acceptance withinZootopia removes the biggest in-world obstacle that might stand in the way of their romance.

If the city can normalize a kudu and a gemsbok being married, a hyena dating a sloth, or a fox and rabbit disguising themselves as a couple without it feeling out of place, then societal approval is no longer the issue. Instead, it becomes a question of whether the story itself chooses to explore that possibility.

That is also why Zootopia 3, if it arrives, may not be able to avoid the topic of a Nick and Judy romance entirely. Whether or not Nick and Judy take that step on screen, the Zootopia franchise has already sent enough signals to make interspecies love feel like a natural part of the city.
