Airing for six seasons from 2009 to 2015, the beloved NBC sitcom chronicling the misadventures of a group of students at Greendale Community College was confirmed to be returning for a long-awaited movie in 2022. Since then, the Community movie has struggled to come to fruition due to busy actor schedules and the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Now, speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Donald Glover, who plays Troy Barnes in the series, confirms that things are looking up for the Community movie. Though the actor and rapper stops short of revealing any official dates, he teases that filming for the project may not be too far off. Check out his comment below:
“We were just on the text chain talking about it. We’re working on it right now. I know everybody’s been saying that for forever, but, I swear to you, I’m not lying about this. I really think it’s something that’s going to happen soon.”
For a time, the movie, which is being written by series creator Dan Harmon and Andrew Guest, was expected to release on Peacock at some point in 2025 or 2026. Considering production has yet to start, a 2027 release is probably looking more likely at this point. A key challenge facing the project is seemingly assembling the core Community cast of Glover, Joel McHale, Danny Pudy, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, and Yvette Nicole Brown.
A release in 2027 would mean the Community movie would be arriving a full 12 years after the conclusion of the series. Relatively little story information has been revealed about the film, but Glover revealed in early 2024 that it would involve a college reunion, with Abed (Pudi) having become a major movie director.
Though Community‘s “Six seasons and a movie” self-prophecy has yet to come to fruition, audiences have had no shortage of material from the show’s main cast. McHale, for example, leads the cast of Animal Control on Fox, and he also recently starred in Scream 7 (2026) alongside Neve Campbell.
Glover remains active as a rapper, and he also voices Yoshi in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026), which is now playing in theaters. Beyond this, he appeared in season 1 of Apple TV’s The Studio, and he voiced Simba in Mufasa: The Lion King (2024).
Brie, meanwhile, starred in Together (2025) opposite her husband, Dave Franco, and she appeared in Apples Never Fall in 2024. Jacobs continues to appear prominently in The Bear, in addition to lending her voice to Invincible, while Pudy recently starred in Going Dutch and Brown voiced a character in Sofia the First: Royal Magic (2026).
Beyond the core cast, series regulars Ken Jeong and Jim Rash are also expected to return for the upcoming movie. One original Community star not expected to appear is Chevy Chase, who left the series during season 4 after clashes with Harmon.
Many questions remain about the Community movie, but Glover’s latest update suggests the project is very much not dead in the water. If production does get underway in the next few months, more concrete updates may not be far off.
