The Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal took five and a half hours to complete, which led to outcry from fans at the time about how long it took. While those same people were nonetheless hooked to the live-stream to see which Marvel Cinematic Universe star would be confirmed next, the unconventional reveal certainly could have been handled differently and kept the focus on the exciting cast members rather than the length of the announcement.
Now that a full year has passed, the Doomsday chair reveal live-stream has aged poorly.
We Still Don’t Know Avengers: Doomsday’s Full Cast 1 Year After The Chair Reveal
Marvel confirmed 27 cast members for Avengers: Doomsday with the chair stunt. Members of the Avengers, Thunderbolts/New Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Asgardians, and Wakandans were all officially announced, alongside RDJ’s Doctor Doom. We knew at the time that this couldn’t be everyone, and that proved to be very true.
The chair reveal didn’t include confirmation that Chris Evans was back as Steve Rogers, with Marvel waiting until Doomsday‘s first trailer to make that long-rumored news officially official. Other MCU veterans like Benedict Cumberbatch, Brie Larson, Hayley Atwell, and Ryan Reynolds remain unconfirmed, as do Marvel legends like Hugh Jackman and Tobey Maguire, despite all having expected roles.
Marvel and RDJ even teased that there would be more cast members a full year ago. On Instagram, the former Iron Man actor wrote, “That must be it…right?” Marvel Studios’ official account replied by saying, “There’s always room for more…” That simple interaction confirmed we didn’t get the full cast list, suggesting another slate of announcements would come.
But a full year later, nothing has come. The four Avengers: Doomsday trailers confirmed Evans, Mabel Cadena as Namora, and India Rose Hemsworth as Love. They also implied that Atwell is back as Peggy Carter. But there have been no further announcements about who is going to appear.
As a result, the Doomsday chair live-stream still feels incomplete after all this time. And that is rather frustrating. There’s plenty of time for Marvel to confirm more cast members, but whether they will do just that remains to be seen.
Why Avengers: Doomsday’s Cast Still Hasn’t Been Completely Revealed
The reason for Marvel holding back on dropping the complete cast list for Avengers: Doomsday is likely tied to the nature of their roles. The movie already has at least 30 characters confirmed, but not every single one will have a major presence.
The rest of the cast members could only have minor roles here before possibly taking on larger ones in Avengers: Secret Wars. Meanwhile, others could merely be cameos meant to keep the universe’s connections intact without promising that they’ll play pivotal roles in the multiverse-crashing storyline.
Announcing additional cast members in the form of major stars could risk fans’ hopes getting too high about how much they are in the movie. Characters like Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch, Daredevil, Storm, Spider-Man, and others very well could pop up in Doomsday but don’t have the most important roles. But if any of their actors are confirmed to return, expectations for their involvement could get out of control.
So long as the remaining characters aren’t confirmed, there will be less attention on them and what they will do. With over two dozen characters already confirmed, there are plenty of Marvel heroes to focus on from a speculation and marketing standpoint. So unless there are others like Evans with pivotal roles yet to be announced, Avengers: Doomsday‘s full cast list might not be known until the movie comes out.
