“We expressed hope that this festive season brings peace, stability and prosperity to West Asia. Condemned attacks on critical infrastructure in the region, which threaten regional stability and disrupt global supply chains. Reiterated the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and ensuring that shipping lanes remain open and secure,” Modi said in a post on social media platform `X’ on Saturday.
The near-blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran has threatened India’s energy and economic security as the narrow chokepoint handles nearly half of India’s oil imports and 60 per cent of its LNG. The Strait is also a primary artery for India’s trade with the Gulf and Europe and Indian exporters are suffering majorly due to stuck shipments, longer shipping routes and increased insurance costs.
The PM also appreciated Iran’s continued support for the safety and security of Indian nationals in Iran, per the post. With an estimated 9,000 Indian citizens residing in Iran for work, studies and trade, their safety remains a top priority for New Delhi amid the current regional volatility.
