Elijah Wood’s Mysterious Ready Or Not 2 Character May Be Immortal, Teases Star

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come will be fighting its way to theaters soon, and Elijah Wood’s character is the talk of the town.

The 2019 predecessor, Ready or Not, was a major success for Searchlight Pictures and grossed over $57 million worldwide against a budget of around $6 million. Lead actress Samara Weaving stole the show and ended up victorious in more ways than one. Her character’s luck is not as good because the sequel is proving even more of a bloody mess than the first.

Wood’s character in the movie is named The Lawyer, and his mysterious background is proving to be a massive question hanging over the sequel. In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan in our SXSW media suite, Wood and co-stars from Ready or Not 2: Here I Come discussed the new horror, but more importantly, on whether Wood’s character could actually be immortal.

Sarah Michelle Gellar: How do you get the job as Satan’s lawyer?

Tyler Gillett: No, we send an email.

Elijah Wood: You know what’s funny, we actually talked about this a lot when we were making it because he’s very mysterious. There’s no backstory to the character at all. So that being the case, it was really up for discussion, like, who this person is, where he comes from, and how long he’s been doing this. And I think he might be immortal.

I think he may have been doing this for hundreds of years. That’s sort of what we landed on.

Kathryn Newton: For sure.

Wood suggests that his character is immortal and acts as a kind of overseer for the satanic pact involving multiple families, explaining the rules of the game.

Elijah Wood: ‘Cause he’s a relatively young guy, so I don’t know that he just interviewed for this job.

Sarah Michelle Gellar: On LinkedIn, the devil looked him up,

Tyler Gillett: He was an intern. No, but there’s the one line with Cronenberg, he says, “It’s been a long time,” and it’s like, wait a minute, how long … And it’s the only sort of backstory that you have, at all, in the movie.

Elijah Wood: That’s true. It’s been a long time.

Grace and Faith look worried as they push a laundry cart in Ready or Not 2

It’s been seven years since the last movie, and the game of satanic Hide and Seek doesn’t seem to end for Weaving’s character, Grace, as the next game seemingly happens immediately after the first. However, the stakes are raised when her estranged sister Faith (played by Newton) is thrown into the mix.

Ready or Not 2 introduces a whole new family, meaning even more characters, and with such an impressive cast, Wood’s character, The Lawyer, often referred to as The Devil’s Advocate, seemingly stands out due to his unusual demeanor and backstory. It’s unclear at the time of writing if there will be a third movie, but chances are Wood may return for even more mayhem, giving him a chance to show exactly who he is and even more sinister…what his true agenda is.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come will arrive in theaters on March 20.
