But the success of many of these original films has already paved the way for some lucrative franchises. Pixar has achieved great success by utilizing its originally-created IP. And after leaning on sequels heavily during the 2010s and its original storytelling overcorrection coinciding with the pandemic, Hoppers is the latest example of the animated studio’s magical ways at work.
It’s a funny and heartfelt original story that has resonated with critics and general audiences. With Pixar riding its winning formula to another hit, it makes the rest of the studio’s upcoming movies all the more exciting. And we know of seven Pixar movies releasing over the next several years.

Toy Story 5
After going original for Hoppers to start off 2026, Pixar will be back in just a few months with its 31st movie, Toy Story 5. The new installment in the studio’s oldest, beloved franchise is coming to theaters on June 19. It hails from Andrew Stanton, who wrote the previous four films and directed WALL-E, and Kenna Harris, who has been with Pixar since 2021’s Luca.
The story of Toy Story 5 follows Woody returning to Bonnie’s room to help Jessie, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of the toys when their kid becomes enamored with technology in the form of a Lilypad tablet.
Toy Story 5 brings back all the usual voice actors and major characters. Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack), Forky (Tony Hale), Hamm (John Ratzenberger), Rex (Wallace Shawn), Slinky Dog (Blake Clark), Bo Peep (Annie Potts), Dolly (Bonnie Hunt), Mr. Pricklepants (John Hopkins), Trixie (Kristen Schaal), and Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves) are returning. Toy Story 5 also recast several roles, including Jeff Bergman and Anna Vocino voicing Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head.

Gatto
While Pixar is doing two films in 2026, they are only confirmed to have one movie out next year, Gatto. The original feature has a confirmed theatrical release date of March 5, 2027. The project comes from Luca director Enrico Casarosa, who has been with Pixar since being a story artist for Cars in 2006.
Gatto is a new, unexpected story for the animation studio. It follows a black cat who lives in Venice, Italy and is indebted to the local feline mob boss. What transpires from that point on is not confirmed. There are also no announced cast members for Gatto at this time.
What is known about the movie is that Gatto will be the first Pixar movie to fully utilize a new 2D-3D blended animation style. A glimpse at the style can be seen in the official artwork released by the studio, while Toy Story 5 also seems to have a sequence with this style, too.

Incredibles 3
Pixar has also confirmed that the Incredibles franchise is going to continue. The announcement came in 2024, with the studio then revealing original director/writer Brad Bird is only writing the screenplay for the threequel. Elemental‘s Peter Sohn is taking on directing duties after working closely with Bird on other films.
While the movie is not officially on Disney’s schedule, it has been confirmed that Incredibles 3 is intended to release in 2028. A summer launch is most likely, considering how well Incredibles II did with its June release in 2018; it made $1.2 billion worldwide.
Exact story details are not known, but the Parr family will be back in action. This includes more of Bob/Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson), Helen/Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), Violet, Flash, and Jack-Jack. And we can’t forget about Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) or Edna Mode (Brad Bird). This could include taking on Underminer (John Ratzenbger) at long last.

Coco 2
Pixar is also poised to turn Coco into a franchise after the first film’s $814 million success story. Despite the original coming out in 2017, the announcement of Coco 2 didn’t come until 2025. Originally, the film was announced with an intended 2029 release window.
Plot details are not known, but Coco 2 will once again see Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina serve as director and co-director. Unkrich has been with Pixar since Toy Story in some capacity, while Molina has been involved since 2007 with Ratatouille.
While no voice cast members have been officially announced, it is expected that the main players from the first film will be back. This includes Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez), Héctor (Gael García Bernal), and other members of Miguel’s family. Expect a whole new set of characters in the Mexican afterlife, as well.
3
Monsters Inc 3
Your favorite monsters are coming back for more laughs. After years of speculation and continuing the franchise on Disney+, signs continue to point to Monsters, Inc. 3 being on the way. No specifications about its release have been revealed at this time, but it seems 2030 is the earliest this sequel will come.
The creative team for the third Monsters movie has yet to be revealed. It’s possible Dan Scanlon returns to direct it after helming Monsters University, which made $743 million worldwide and received positive reviews, after also making Onward for the studio in 2020.
What is assured, even if not confirmed, is that Sulley and Mike Wazowski will be back in Monsters 3. Whether its another prequel or a proper sequel to the 2001 original film, they are the franchise’s mainstays. This will mean more of John Goodman and Billy Crystal voicing the characters. Perhaps this will even be the movie that shows us more of Boo’s life after growing up some.
2
Ono Ghost Market
Sequels are not the only thing on Pixar’s mind, though. It’s also been revealed that the studio is working on an original project titled Ono Ghost Market. No release date is known for this movie, but it won’t be out until 2028 or later based on the studio’s current slate.
Most details about Ono Ghost Market remain under wraps. The creative team and cast members have yet to be revealed. As the title implies, the story revolves around a supernatural market where the living and dead can commune, which stems from a myth in Asian culture.
Interestingly, Variety revealed that Ono Ghost Market was originally set up to be a Disney+ TV show. As part of the overall strategy shift at Disney to focus more on movies and less on streaming content, Pete Docter and Pixar’s leadership have shifted the project to be a feature film.
1
Untitled Musical
It has also been revealed that Pixar is developing its first-ever musical. The untitled movie comes from Turning Red director Domee Shi. This one also will not be ready to go until 2028 at the earliest. But given the fact that it seems to be early in development, a 2029 release or later could be more likely.
While some could argue that Coco was Pixar’s first musical, considering the importance music plays in the film, this new one will be more of an official, traditional musical, it appears. Shi’s attachment to it is certainly exciting, especially since she already teased what she could do with musical sequences in Turning Red through 4*Town’s performances.
The question at this point is whether the musical elements will be baked into the plot, such as having a singer/band/musician at the forefront, or be done like, say, Wicked, where the songs are added on top of a different type of genre. In either case, it will be fun to see what a Pixar musical movie looks and sounds like whenever this project finally comes out.
