Introduced back in 2017, Bethesda’s Creation Club allowed fans to get their hands on Bethesda-approved mods, albeit at a cost. If you are an avid modder, you will already see the problem, as the whole point of being able to mod your games is having access to free, fan-made creations. However, Bethesda quickly turned mods into microtransactions, and since its inception, the Creation Club has become something of a sore spot for fans.
Fallout 4 Will Continue To Get New Content Via Paid Mods
Despite making both free and paid mods available in both The Elder Scrolls Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4 and renaming the club to just Creations, the program is still not a hit with fans, and now following yet another statement from Howard, things are going from bad to worse. In a recent interview with Mortismal Gaming, Howard spoke about Creations and revealed that the team was happy with the way it was going. However, he also revealed that they had hopes of the initiative going even further in upcoming years.
“I think the good news is that [Creations] is a really healthy community.
I think when you go into ‘paid mods,’ and we’ve had a couple stabs at it with some success and some issues…we really like where we’re at, our creators are great, we’ve seen that kind of rise all boats. There’s great content here, go into the menu and check it out. We’re really, really happy with that program, with how it’s going, from the free stuff, the paid stuff, and our own stuff. I think our issue now is getting that content in front of more people, because we think it’s so good. I think we have a little bit of friction still with how our audience gets that stuff and plays it.”
Paid Mods Are A Controversial Subject
Following the launch of Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition back in November 2025, Bethesda was met with criticism after a Fallout 4 Creation Bundle was also released alongside. Offering premium user-created mods, the general fanbase was not happy to have to pay for creations that had previously been free, especially with Bethesda games owing a lot to the modding community over the years. However, despite the uproar, it seems as though Bethesda has no plans on limiting its Creation program, with plans to extend it even further. Let us hope that this decision does not come back to haunt them.
