Since its launch, Square Enix released a remastered version, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, in 2013, but fans are still left feeling divided over a potential remake. After all, the game is now 25-years old, and so if any game deserves a remake, it is one fast approaching its 30th anniversary. However, with a remaster already under its belt, is a remake worth it?
Is A Final Fantasy 10 Remake In Development?
A potential Final Fantasy X remake has been the source of discussion for many years, and over on r/finalfantasyx, one user posted, “If they made a FFX remake that looked and played like [Clair Obscur: Expedition 33], I would never leave my mum’s basement.” Although the two games are pretty different, we can safely assume that the poster refers to the polished turn-based combat that Expedition 33 showcased when it launched last year. Nevertheless, fellow FFX fans were quick to share their support. “A remake could enhance Spira and its villages,” one user commented. “We’d be able to actually get lost in the Calm Lands (instead of seeing its exit and its entrance), we could get a Ronso settlement at Gagazet, we would be able to actually explore the biggest city of Bevelle instead of just walking on one bridge, we could explore Luca and not just it’s Harbour, you get the point. I’d love to see it all.”
Despite rumors suggesting that a Final Fantasy X remake is in fact in development at Square Enix, it has not been officially confirmed and so, at the time of writing, it is worth taking any leak with a pinch of salt. However, that has not stopped fans from discussing what they would hope from such a major project, especially as remakes can easily lose the magic of the original.
Do We Need A Final Fantasy 10 Remake?
Over on r/finalfantasyx in a separate post, one user shared their thoughts on wanting Final Fantasy X to “get the attention it deserves” by bringing it to modern audiences. “A lot of people don’t like “old” games because of so many different reasons. I think this game is definitely worth a remake. If FF7 can have a remake, why can’t this wonderful game have a remake?” However, it was some fans that were feeling a bit more hesitant about a potential remake, especially considering we already have a Final Fantasy X remaster.
“As much as I love the game, I don’t think it’s necessary,” one user shared, whilst another agreed, adding, “Same here. FFX is sheer perfection. No remake needed. Next question!” Whilst other fans believe that other installments, such as VIII and IX, deserve the remake treatment first, others believe that a remake would be better suited in ten years or so. As always, remaking such a fan favorite and classic is never an easy task, and it seems as though Square Enix is in no hurry to attempt it for Final Fantasy X.
