There’s good reason to question its accuracy, considering how close we are to the film’s release and the notion that such a high-profile character feels like it would be an aspect of the movie Illumination would seek to promote. If Wario does appear, it feels far more likely that the character would be limited to a cameo or post-credits sequence.
However, that’s not to say The Super Mario Galaxy Movie doesn’t have a secret villain of some sort. Options for that do exist, including one that feels a lot more practical and more appropriate for the story based on the direction it’s heading.
Wart Makes More Sense Than Wario If The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Is Hiding A Secret Villain
Released in 1988, The Super Mario Bros. 2 saw Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Peach go up against Wart, an evil, toad-like warlord who had used a device called the Dream Machine to conquer Subcon, the dream world. The game followed the adventures of Mario and company in Subcon as they worked to defeat Wart, who served as the game’s final boss.
Wart has received cameos in games since, but has never repeated the prominent role he played in the 1988 NES classic. But coming back into relevance could be feasible for Wart in light of one of the settings The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is introducing. Trailers have shown Princess Peach inside what looks like a casino occupied by characters who originated in Super Mario Bros. 2.
Among the enemies that the main characters have to fight while in Subcon are Clawgrip, Birdo, and Mouser, all of which have been spotted in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s mysterious casino. The fact that the film has clearly made this specific game the primary inspiration for this area points to the possibility of Wart being there too.
It would make sense that if one of the locations in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is based on Super Mario Bros. 2, it would also incorporate its ruler from the source material. If that’s the case, whatever battle Princess Peach has on her hands with Birdo and the others may culminate in a confrontation with Wart, who could be the leader of this world Peach is on.
Although the main boss of a mainline entry in the Super Mario franchise, the length of time that’s passed since the character has held a major role in a game would make Wart an obscure addition to the film, as many younger viewers won’t recognize him. That said, including Wart is perfectly with the approach that’s been taken so far.
References to a long list of Super Mario games – both old and new – are abound in the marketing for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which goes to show that not only is it bringing in characters like Rosalina who will lead to a lot of fanfare, but it’s also willing to incorporate all manner of deep-cuts to please long-time fans, and a surprise appearance from Wart would certainly serve that purpose.
