FX’s Disinherited Looks Set To Become The Next Succession

Succession‘s four-season run created a legacy that will be hard to top anytime soon, but FX officially has a competitor that could emerge as a worthy successor. When the family drama first debuted in 2018, it took a few episodes to really get warmed up. However, once it had viewers hooked, HBO’s hit series never looked back.

Although the studio is responsible for some of the greatest TV stories of all time, some would argue that Succession was HBO’s last truly great show, as it ticked all the right boxes to earn a near-flawless reputation. It may not be quite as good as The Sopranos or Game of Thrones, but for many, it’s not far off.

As a result, matching these standards will be difficult for any project, no matter the genre. Nevertheless, some of the most crucial elements that made Succession a must-watch masterpiece appear to be present in FX’s upcoming series, Disinherited, and while it has a lot to live up to, the new show sounds like it has plenty of potential.

FX’s Disinherited Sounds Like The Perfect Successor To Succession

Having concluded over two-and-a-half years ago, Succession may finally have found an unofficial successor in the form of Disinherited, which sounds a lot like the hit drama. Having been announced last week, FX’s new series will reportedly follow two sisters receiving an unexpected inheritance, granting them generational wealth while also throwing them into a life of crime.

The two shows may not have the exact same plots, but Disinherited seems as though it will revolve around money and corruption, just like Succession did. Interestingly though, the central characters in FX’s project will be completely unprepared for this kind of life, forced to confront the downsides of being rich beyond their wildest dreams.

According to Deadline, the narrative has been described as “A deeply human story about family, power and consequence, that plays with high moral stakes.” Based on this, it sounds like Disinherited will certainly match the tone and drama that made Succession so iconic, yet the protagonists of this series should give it its own unique vibe.

In Succession, the Roy family grew up wealthy, meaning they knew about the business and political decisions involved in keeping this kind of wealth. However, it was the characters’ spoiled, power-hungry nature that led to so much backstabbing and internal conflict, ultimately culminating in a controversial yet memorable finale that makes Succession worth watching a second time.

Hopefully, Disinherited finds a way to be every bit as gripping as HBO’s masterpiece while still forging its own identity — something the premise already makes a real possibility. If this is the case, the FX show may wind up being the ultimate replacement and could begin crafting its own equally impressive legacy.

Peter Gould’s Involvement Makes Disinherited Even More Exciting

As if Disinherited didn’t have enough going for it, Peter Gould will be involved as executive producer and already helped direct the pilot episode. For those unfamiliar with Gould, he was the showrunner and co-creator of Better Call Saul, which is easily one of the greatest TV shows of the 21st century, proving FX’s project is in good hands.

He also wrote and directed numerous Breaking Bad episodes, having been a part of the show for all five seasons, highlighting how impressive his resume is. Both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are perfect from start to finish, and while these shows took a whole team of creative minds to make them so legendary, Gould’s role can’t be understated.

Therefore, seeing what he brings to Disinherited will be fascinating, especially if he can capture that same tension and long-term storytelling that worked for his previous projects. With Knives Out and Poker Face creator Rian Johnson also part of the series, the sky is the limit for this intriguing drama, which can’t come soon enough.

Finding out how Gould’s expert ideas combine with Johnson’s excellent writing is already making Disinherited feel like one of the most highly anticipated shows currently in production, and a strong early reception could make it FX’s new biggest series, and the perfect answer to Succession‘s absence.
