GTA 6 Is Even More Expensive Than We Thought
Since it was first announced back in 2022, analysts have been predicting just how much Rockstar Games will have spent on the development and production of Grand Theft Auto VI. Previous reports have suggested around the $2 billion mark by the end of the game’s development. However, an official document from Rockstar North itself has revealed that the studio has already spent over $2.1 billion on salaries since 2019, and as such, production costs are expected to reach upwards of $3 billion by Grand Theft Auto VI‘s November release.
The document, which has since been shared online, proves that costs for Grand Theft Auto VI are a lot higher than previously estimated. Additionally, according to Rockstar’s parent company and GTA publisher, Take-Two Interactive, pre-production for GTA VI began way back in 2018 following the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2 (via Sports Keeda). Then, development began “in earnest” in 2020, and so this rumored $3 billion has been racked up in just eight years.
It is also worth noting that this $3 billion will cover everything relating to the game’s development, including: salaries/wages, production, advertising, and more. However, with Rockstar recently coming under fire for owing money to its employees, it would not be too farfetched to believe that this estimated cost is even higher still.
How Much Will GTA 6 Cost Players?
If these estimates are true, then Grand Theft Auto VI will officially become the most expensive game ever made, beating previous titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II at $300+ million and even Rockstar’s fellow hit, Red Dead Redemption 2, which was estimated to cost anything between $370 and $540 million.
However, what does this mean for fans? Will these ever-growing costs mean that we will have to fork out more for a copy of Grand Theft Auto VI? Well, that is something we do not yet know, as Rockstar is yet to reveal a potential price tag for the highly anticipated release. Additionally, with the cost of both software and hardware increasing rapidly over recent years, it would not be surprising if GTA VI came alongside an eye-watering price tag. Luckily, if any game is going to get us forking out the cash, it will be Grand Theft Auto VI when it launches later this year.
