The book examines the growing importance of cities as drivers of economic growth and innovation, while highlighting the climate-related challenges confronting urban areas, including rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, pressure on natural resources and extreme weather events. It explores how cities can convert these risks into opportunities for sustainable and inclusive development.
Speaking at the launch in Gandhinagar, Patel appreciated the publication and said the themes addressed in the book are timely and aligned with India’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. Drawing from her experience in urban governance, Agarwal — a 2005-batch Indian Administrative Service officer who earlier served as Municipal Commissioner of Surat and Vadodara — places particular emphasis on green and climate finance. The book highlights instruments such as green bonds, blended finance, municipal finance reforms, pooled financing mechanisms and international climate funds as key tools to mobilise large-scale investment in sustainable urban infrastructure.
