Directed by Bryan Fuller in his feature film debut, the action fantasy film hit theaters on December 12 following its premiere at TIFF. Dust Bunny marks an exciting reunion for Fuller and star Mads Mikkelsen after the pair worked together on Hannibal, a three-season NBC series with a passionate cult following.
Following its quiet theatrical run, Lionsgate now confirms that Dust Bunny will arrive on digital and 4K Ultra HD on April 28 with a retail price of $26.99. This physical media release, which includes Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos Audio, will come with the following special features:
- Making Dust Bunny
- Monster Craft
- Q&A Sizzle
- Cute to Cutthroat
- Mads Choreography Video
- Cast Explainers
- Theatrical Trailer
With a reported budget of $12 million, Dust Bunny was a significant disappointment at the box office. During its run in theaters, the film grossed just under $1 million.
Also starring Sophie Sloan, David Dastmalchian, Sigourney Weaver, Sheila Atim, Rebecca Henderson, and Caspar Phillipson, Dust Bunny follows a young girl (Sloan) who enlists the help of her mysterious neighbor (Mikkelsen) to kill the monster under her bed, which she thinks ate her family. In addition to serving as director, Fuller also wrote the screenplay for the movie.
Though Dust Bunny may not have been a big box office success, the film’s unique premise, charming performances, and visual flair did earn it positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, Fuller’s film holds a strong 85% critics’ score, with the audience-driven Popcornmeter score only slightly lower at 81%.
ScreenRant‘s own Dust Bunny review from Gregory Nussen goes against the grain somewhat. Awarding the film only a 4 out of 10, Nussen praises the performances from Mikkelsen and Sloan while taking issue with the film’s script and visual presentation. They write:
It’s an offensively garish film, with 5B’s sartorial decisions only one aspect of this strange world. The interior of Aurora’s apartment is forest green with wallpaper in excessive floral stencils. To move herself around the apartment without touching the floor (the dust bunny’s one rule, apparently), she resorts to pushing herself around with a purple, candy cane-like broomstick atop a copper pig. Every fight is blown out of proportion by flashing lights, almost like we’re suddenly in an anime.
Dust Bunny arrives in theaters as enthusiasm continues for a potential Hannibal season 4. Fuller created the dark NBC series about serial killer Hannibal Lecter, with Mikkelsen starring as the eponymous cannibal and Hugh Dancy starring as FBI criminal profiler Will Graham.
Hannibal was cancelled following the release of season 3 in 2015, and calls have continued for Fuller to continue the story in a season 4 on another platform. Fuller, Mikkelsen, and Dancy have all expressed interest in returning for additional episodes, but, so far, there’s been no official movement on a revival.
It remains to be seen how Dust Bunny will perform on home viewing platforms, but it’s evidently the closest thing to a Hannibal reunion fans have gotten thus far. With positive reviews, the film could end up enjoying a strong second life following its digital and physical media release.
