In late 2025, the world learned Doctor Who was not long for Disney+. Despite the streaming giant teaming with the BBC in 2023, the partnership was quietly cut down two years later. While Disney+ has continued to show support for Doctor Who through 2026 with Russell T Davies’ holiday special, there has been no word on where The Doctor will call home next. But in a new interview with HBO boss Casey Bloys, fans were given a tease of what may be in the future.
Speaking with Radio Times, Bloys (the chairman of CEO of HBO & Max Content) was asked if his team would be interested in onboarding Doctor Who in the wake of Disney’s cut. It was there the executive said he was open to the partnership, but no formal plans have been presented to him regarding the TARDIS.
“It has not been presented to us,” Bloys shared. “As with anything, I would say ‘Never say never’ – it’s just not something that I know about.”
HBO Max may not have a firm plan in the works for Doctor Who, but it appears Bloys is willing to hear the BBC out on the hit show. The executive’s comments closely mirror a note given by Lindsay Salt, the director of drama commissioning at the BBC, in March 2026. During an interview with Deadline, Salt was asked about HBO Max’s potential involvement with Doctor Who. Salt was careful to avoid any surefire promises to fans, but the BBC executive said the team was eager to map out Doctor Who‘s future ASAP.
“We’ll wait and see how we figure it out. HBO have been great partners creatively. There’s a lot of stuff that is changing out there.”
With Disney+ stepping away from its investment in Doctor Who, the board is free for another media giant to bring the BBC drama to audiences outside the UK. The future of Who is primed as the show’s last season closed on a rather large cliffhanger: a regeneration. Ncuti Gatwa’s take on The Doctor closed out the season with a surprise regeneration, and the finale closed with a look at The Doctor’s new incarnation… Billie Piper. The stunning reveal left audiences buzzing with questions, giving Doctor Who solid headway into its next season. Now, the question is whether HBO Max will help oversee the show’s much-anticipated return.
Doctor Who is currently eyeing its next release this December. Davis’ awaited holiday special will debut around Christmas 2026, but no firm release date has been given for the episode yet.
