HBO Max’s New 6-Part Crime Thriller Series Becomes Global Streaming Hit

HBO Max’s new six-part crime thriller series, Privileges, has already turned into a global streaming hit fresh off its premiere.

Created, written, and directed by Marie Monge and Vladimir de Fontenay, the French series premiered globally on HBO Max on March 27 and will be releasing its six episodes weekly on Fridays throughout the month of April, with each episode running roughly 52 minutes long.

Now, shortly after its premiere, Privileges ranks 10th on HBO Max’s Top 10 TV shows in the world for today, March 31, per FlixPatrol. It ranks below The Pitt in first place, Rooster, DTF St. Louis, Like Water for Chocolate, Memory of a Killer, Yali Çapkini, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, and Doc in ninth.

This week, Privileges is on HBO Max’s Top 10 in a total of 32 countries spread mostly across Europe, with additional countries in Asia (including Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Taiwan), plus Belize in Central America and Haiti in the Caribbean. Privileges is streaming in the United States, though it is not currently in the Top 10.

What Is Privileges About?

Set within The Citadel, an upscale Paris hotel, the series follows a young incarcerated woman, Adèle Charki, who gains a second chance through a day-release program working as a bellhop. While on the job, she soon uncovers a hidden criminal underworld lurking beneath the hotel’s polished surface.

Blending traditional French noir with psychological thriller elements, Privileges delivers a tense survival narrative centered on power dynamics, corporate intrigue, and the possibility of redemption. Adèle is forced to navigate and subtly challenge both the privileged elite and a dangerous criminal network competing for control.

The show stars Manon Bresch in the lead role alongside Melvil Poupaud, Zar Amir Ebrahimi, Roxane Mesquida, Nadia Benzakour, Nina Zem, Josepsh Olivennes, Anne Azoulay, Mila Michael, Sandor Funtek, Stephanie Atala, Eva Huault, Nancy Marie-Claire, and Aaron Kahn.

How Is Privileges Being Received?

With only one episode currently streaming on HBO Max, Privileges doesn’t have any reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. It does have one audience review from Tracey S (@RT20851134), who rated the show four and a half out of five stars and writes, “Good first episode. Interesting cast with great locations in Paris.”

In turn, Privileges does not qualify for either a critics or audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Decider‘s “Stream It Or Skip It” by Joel Keller urges audiences to stream the series, writing the following:

“The first episode of Privileges sets up a whole lot of story threads and potential explosive relationships that promise to be both sexy and dangerous, all in the elegant setting of a luxury hotel in Paris.”

Christine Kinori of The Review Geek writes that “with five more episodes to go, Privileges is off to a good start, and the cast delivers a good performance. As long as the writing remains tight; this will be a good series!
