Viewers go into psychological thrillers expecting to be surprised, so it takes a lot for an entry into the genre to truly stun viewers. Of course, this sometimes results in the creators of TV shows in the genre getting too ambitious and trying to pull off convoluted, goofy twists that would leave M. Night Shyamalan himself rolling his eyes.
Fortunately, HBO’s one-season masterpiece Sharp Objects is here to show writers in the genre how it’s done. The eight-episode HBO miniseries from 2018 adapts author Gillian Flynn’s debut novel of the same name from 2006, following Amy Adams’ troubled reporter Camille Preaker as she returns to her hometown to investigate a series of gruesome murders.
Sharp Objects Has An Incredible Last-Second Twist That Changes Everything
Camille struggles with self-harm and alcoholism, and her psychological problems are worsened when she returns to the house of her smothering mother, Adora. Camille’s precocious younger stepsister, Amma, has effectively taken her place as the object of her mother’s obsessive affection, and Camille is worried that Adora has something to do with the disturbing murders.
Like HBO’s earlier psychological thriller True Detective, Sharp Objects focuses on a series of strange, ritualistic killings of children. However, the killings that occur in Camille’s small hometown of Wind Gap all target young girls specifically, which makes Camille worry that her sister Amma could be next. Although Amma can be spiteful and smug, her older sister still looks out for her.
Viewers unfamiliar with the series should read no further for fear of ruining the show, as Sharp Objects is one of the best psychological thrillers of the last decade. As those who have seen the series know, this is due in large part to its ingenious last-second twist, which is lifted directly from Flynn’s source novel.
Sharp Objects’ Ending Twist Makes HBO’s Psychological Thriller More Disturbing
From hereon out, there will be spoilers for this classic miniseries, so anyone unfamiliar with the show should be warned. However, readers who love a good psychological thriller are likely to already know what is coming. The revelation that Amma, not Adora, is the real killer is the twist that makes Sharp Objects a masterpiece.
Throughout the miniseries, Adora is depicted as a woman with a deeply unhealthy attachment to her daughters and a toxic, codependent zeal for excessive caregiving. As such, it does not come as a major shock when the series finale reveals that, in the gruesome case of Munchausen’s by Proxy, Adora has been poisoning Camille.
Although Adora admits to the poisoning, she maintains her innocence in the murder of the teenage girls. Still, in a trial that rocks the town of Wind Gap, she is soon put on trial and found guilty. Although Amma visits her in prison, Camille can’t bring herself to speak to her mother after she poisoned her. Amma moves in with Camille.
It is this move that sets up a twist worthy of a horror show when Amma’s new local friend goes missing after an argument. While searching Amma’s room, Camille is disturbed to find a tooth in her dollhouse, implying the teenage girl killed her friend. Camille then realizes the entire floor of her dollhouse’s bathroom is made of teeth.
To her horror, the show’s protagonist realizes she has been harboring the real culprit behind the murders just as Amma comes home and, in a disquieting whisper, asks Camille that she “Don’t tell mama.” It’s a horrifying revelation that makes an already twisted story all the more disturbing.
This Perfect Ending Twist Made Sharp Objects Season 2 Impossible
Of course, this ingenious twist came at a cost for the show. Unlike Hulu’s recent psychological thriller masterpiece Tell Me Lies, which managed to draw its central toxic relationship out over three seasons, Sharp Objects effectively ensured that the show would never receive a second season by staying true to the source material.
While viewers never see Camille bring Amma to justice, it is vanishingly unlikely that she covered up her stepsister’s crimes after this grisly discovery. Even if Camille wanted to, and it seems unlikely that she would, it would be incredibly hard to hide her most recent murder.
Moreover, Camille’s entire character arc throughout the twisty story of Sharp Objects centered on her desire to bring the small town’s killer to justice. While Camille shares a lot of formative trauma with Amma, this is not going to be enough for her to cover up the killings she committed.
Sharp Objects’ Ending: The Real Killer & Post-Credits Scenes Explained
Sharp Objects ended with some startling reveals, some hidden after the credits. We explain the motives of the real killer – and what it all means.
As such, a second season of Sharp Objects would most likely need to focus on Camille’s attempts to expose Amma as the real killer, which is a much less interesting, dark, and disturbing story. The Gillian Flynn adaptation ended at the perfect time to maximize the impact of its twist, making Sharp Objects a true psychological thriller masterpiece.
