In the coming years, HBO has several major adaptations in the works, including the highly anticipated Harry Potter TV show. The new series is expected to be extremely faithful to J.K. Rowling’s fantasy book series, allowing viewers to finally see all those nuanced details that the Harry Potter films left out. Of course, even with seven seasons and likely close to 100 episodes, it will be a significant challenge for HBO to meet viewers’ expectations. No book adaptation will ever perfectly match the world created within readers’ minds. The Harry Potter remake will have to be so good that everyone willingly puts those impossible expectations aside.
Some time after Harry Potter‘s premiere, HBO will release yet another TV adaptation set within a beloved fantasy world. The Baldur’s Gate series will continue the story of the video game Baldur’s Gate 3, which is set within one of the universes of Dungeons & Dragons. This project has a lot going for it. It will be created by Craig Mazin, who very successfully adapted The Last of Us from a video game into a TV show with HBO, as well as creatives from Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast. Of course, these details simply mean expectations for the Baldur’s Gate show will be that much higher.
HBO’s Baldur’s Gate TV Show Faces A Nearly Impossible Task
HBO has set itself up to create a really exceptional TV show with Baldur’s Gate. Mazin has endlessly expressed what a personal fan he is of the games, stating that he has close to a thousand hours logged in Baldur’s Gate 3. Additionally, Mazin is a dedicated Dungeon Master with years of experience within Dungeons & Dragons‘ Forgotten Realms and beyond. Add in the participation of Chris Perkins, Wizards of the Coast’s head of story, and there’s every reason to believe that Baldur’s Gate will be a TV show made by fans, for fans. Still, that may not be enough.
Baldur’s Gate can’t function the way a regular adaptation like Harry Potter can.
Baldur’s Gate can’t function the way a regular adaptation like Harry Potter can. In keeping with the structure of Dungeons & Dragons, the game is shaped by its players. There are thousands of possible unique storylines, all dependent on the way someone chooses to move about within the universe. This means there is no central canon story for HBO to adapt. Baldur’s Gate is something different to everyone, so it will be that much harder to please prospective viewers.
Mazin and HBO are approaching this issue with the best possible solution, setting up its TV show as a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 rather than a rehashing of any previous storylines. That way, the central narrative won’t completely step on the toes of anyone’s in-game experiences. However, the fact that Baldur’s Gate has so many possible endings means that even this isn’t a perfect solution. HBO’s show will have to commit to one launching point, so people are bound to be let down from the jump, regardless of how Baldur’s Gate is handled.
Expectations For Book & Video Game Adaptations Are Higher Than Ever
Just a handful of years ago, HBO’s mission with Baldur’s Gate wouldn’t have seemed quite so impossible. However, there have been so many utter failures in the world of book and video game adaptations that fans have become skeptical, cynical, and critical from the very moment a new one is announced. Everyone is so tired of being let down that anything short of perfection is unacceptable. Add in those very few success stories, and expectations climb even higher. We know now it’s possible, so we expect companies to stop messing around and give us what they promised.
This is all part of why untrusting eyes are firmly on HBO. There are about a million ways shows like Harry Potter and Baldur’s Gate can go wrong. The company and its creatives will need to listen to fans, while also remembering that it will be impossible to please everyone. Trying too hard is another sure-fire way to mess things up. There’s only a narrow path forward, especially for Baldur’s Gate. We can only wait and see whether HBO can find it.
