Baldur’s Gate is a role-playing video game franchise set in the Forgotten Realms universe of Dungeons & Dragons. It is known for its deep narratives, tactical combat, and the impact of player decisions. The original storyline centers on a Bhaalspawn, a child of the god of murder. Baldur’s Gate 3 builds on this storyline with a more modern approach.
The upcoming HBO series marks the first major live-action adaptation of the Dungeons & Dragons game. And, naturally, Baldur’s Gate’s loyal fans have a lot to say about it. Several gamers have voiced their support and expressed their excitement. However, just as many took the news negatively, fearing that the adaptation would destroy the franchise’s legacy. Newbon, on the other hand, encouraged players to approach the series with patience and an open mind instead of hating it right off the bat.
In an interview with FRVR, the actor explained how people must understand that adaptations have to differ from the source material in some way, adding that video games and TV operate on fundamentally different storytelling levels. While games like Baldur’s Gate 3 immerse players in interactive experiences where they directly shape the story, shows and films don’t have the ability to do that. So, of course, HBO’s adaptation would be different from a “choose your own adventure” game. He advised viewers to respect the creative team and let them have the freedom to deliver their own interpretation, rather than expecting a direct replication of the original.
Newbon also said that the untitled HBO sequel’s showrunner, Craig Mazin, known for the critically acclaimed series Chernobyl, is more than capable of doing Baldur’s Gate justice, praising his talent as a creator. He added that he was confident that Mazin could produce a high-quality adaptation. The actor also acknowledged that the franchise’s fans’ concerns stem from their love for the source material. However, he said that they shouldn’t preemptively hate the show or make any assumptions about it.
Larian Studios, the developer behind Baldur’s Gate 3, is not directly involved in the HBO series, but founder Swen Vincke has expressed his happiness with the project after discussions with Mazin. His comments imply that the creative team is committed to respecting the game’s lore and spirit. The combination of Vincke’s approval, Newbon’s support, and an experienced showrunner strongly suggests that the series can honor the game’s legacy.
