Per Variety, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games JB Perrette recently stated that “the real fruits would start coming in in ’27–’28 when we return to some of our biggest franchises.” So, perhaps we just got a tease that Hogwarts Legacy 2 and the upcoming Harry Potter show will be released alongside one another.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 Could Launch With The HBO Show
This is incredibly exciting for anyone who is a fan of WB’s greatest IPs, and such a confident declaration suggests that we may be able to anticipate the long-awaited Hogwarts Legacy sequel to arrive in a year or two. This doesn’t confirm that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is one of the big franchises that it is returning to soon, and yet there is no other WB IP that would make more sense to have a game released in the same span.
Hogwarts Legacy launched in February 2023 and, assuming that Avalanche has been developing a sequel ever since, an early 2027 release would be fantastic. Even if it did not launch until late 2027 or early 2028, however, it could still be released in time to ride the wave of hype and discourse that the Harry Potter show is sure to generate, and maybe that is why Perrette gave a broader window of “’27–’28,” rather than committing to a window of 2027 that may turn out to be unrealistic.
Fans Are Wondering What Era The Sequel Is In
Now, Hogwarts Legacy 2 being released closer to when the series is airing does not necessarily mean that the game will also be an inspired adaptation of the Harry Potter novels. In fact, it is completely unknown what era a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy could take place in, whether it is a direct sequel to the first game’s narrative and explores its late-1800s set dressing or an unrelated sequel that intends to plant itself within the era and generation when young Harry Potter attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Having a new game and a new TV show that both center on the exploits of Harry Potter would allow for a harmonious brand synergy, especially if a slate of games were to follow Hogwarts Legacy 2 while the series continues to release subsequent seasons. Nonetheless, it will be fascinating to see if a Hogwarts Legacy sequel and HBO’s Harry Potter show manage to exceed expectations and both release around the same time.
